Supporting our students is not a zero-sum game. As I said yesterday in committee, while we couldn’t fund everything through the education levy, I am committed to finding other funding to make this critical investment, protect our education investments, and provide additional food security.

We just announced a proposal to fund universal free school meals for all Seattle Public School students starting this fall, while maintaining new investments aimed at ensuring low-income students have food on their tables at home. Some investments are just too important not to make.

If the Council passes the Seattle Transit Measure Renewal today, it will head to your General Election ballot this November.

My other amendment, guaranteeing 75 percent of the measure's funding will be used for transit, will mean better bus service for every Seattleite. We had better bus service in 2021 than we do today. We need to make sure people have transit options they can rely on.

It's unacceptable that it takes 45 minutes to an hour to get downtown from Ballard by bus. In the past few years, the 15x and 18x bus lines were suspended and the 17x has been reduced. My amendments will help us fight to get more direct bus service from Ballard to downtown and to light rail.

We're voting on better bus service today! Council will consider the Seattle Transit Measure renewal today at 2 PM. It includes amendments I sponsored to guarantee more funding for bus service and prioritize faster service from regional growth centers, like Ballard, to downtown and light rail.

Utility costs are housing costs. For so many in our community, these costs can be the difference between making rent or falling behind. This legislation is one of the fastest, most effective ways we can put money back into the pockets of working families who need it most.

Thank you to King County Metro, @seattledot.bsky.social, and @seattleparksandrec.bsky.social for helping make this a reality. The best way to support the new Golden Gardens Direct route — and make sure it comes back next year — is by riding the bus. It’s as easy as going to the beach.
