I'm actually seeing people complain about Odyssey Discourse, and I want to grab them by the shoulders and remind them that this movie came out *less* than 2 weeks ago. And the "Discourse" is actually healthy & conducted with a lot of humor, which means it hardly even counts as "Discourse"

"The Odyssey" was a fine movie but its politics were a bit iffy. wouldve been way better if at the end the Odysseus turned to the camera & said "The FOMC shoudn't have raised rates in 2015" & then specified that they should have waited until Q2 2017.

That’s not even a full throated defense of sociology, I think there are meaningful critiques of the field, but “Why aren’t you doing more rigorous analysis!” sounds a lot like “Why isn’t your analysis turning up the result I want.”

I think a fair read of this piece is “the problem with sociology is that it is insufficiently flattering to the powerful and uninterested in advancing their aims.”

It is a good enough execution of some reasonably ambitious ideas that a lot of my position is “Oh thank god it’s nice to confirm you can still make a hit like this.”

Although, reading this through a second time, another possible explanation occurs to me, which is that the Culture didn’t do anything to start the war at all and they’re just lying about it to give both sides an excuse for peace before total civilizational implosion.

Okay we finally get the backstory on what The Culture actually did and it looks like they were the ones putting political pressure to get the reformist Presidents into office and, to hear the Loyalist faction describe it, accidentally got a guy bent on violent revenge into office.

So can you be sure that no Mind ever experiences even a brief moment where it might do something wrong?
