I'm now actively planning for most of January to be at home & assuming it'll be too damn hot, crossing 40°C+ on multiple days. And then when I mention it to my family & friends in India, they laugh because they've survived near 50°C days in their summer.

On the other hand, this is a great way to illustrate the spacial inefficiency of cars. It's good reminder that cars aren't a technology problem; they're a geometry problem. Or, as @doctorow.pluralistic.net succinctly put it, "Geometry hates cars."

Zeke HausfatherWith all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....

When the right wing exploded in ridiculous outrage over Mamdani's 78F thermostat advice, it was a smokescreen for a deeper attack on energy efficiency that serves only one constituent: the fossil fuel industry Gift link to my column for @opinion.bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

“The rise in observed temperatures in France has outpaced projections made by climate models, with June maximum temperatures more in line with what was expected for the 2070s.”
Andrew DesslerI have a commentary in CarbonBrief about the French heatwave. A few highlights. www.carbonbrief.org/guest-post-f...

honestly I'm not sure I'd have raised my eyebrows more reading than than if I'd read it was a truck carrying tigers and one carrying wolverines, all colliding with a truck of angry wasps. ...in a hyena preserve.
