He/him. Seattle. People should be able to walk and roll without dying.

I think every able bodied person that lives in the wui should be required to own an emergency evacuation ebike that they use to keep roads clear for disabled people and first responders.

I for one think it shows a real lack of clarity and ability to lead. Why couldn't they announce this change earlier in the day. Are we sure the Seafair organization is really up to the task of running Seafair. We'll need to see clearer communication from them in the future.

I'm pretty uncomfortable with the Seattle Times and a number of members of council seemingly gleefully encouraging insubordination from high level members of the executive branch.

I'll say this again, transportation safety orgs like @streetsalliance.bsky.social should be involved in the police chief search because traffic safety is consistently the number one public safety issue in Seattle.

Jason

This isn't my opinion about this topic, we literally do a yearly survey and for the past three years traffic safety is the number one public safety issue.

I hope that we'll see transportation advocacy orgs represented in this search committee. The top public safety concern for a number of years from Seattle residents is dangerous driving. A new police chief should be able to engage with that reality.

Mayor Katie B. Wilson

Seattle deserves a real voice in choosing its next Police Chief. We’ll create a search committee that reflects the diversity of our city and builds a public engagement process that gives residents a meaningful role in defining what we look for in our next chief. More details on that to come.

Forgiving infrastructure means building so that when people make mistakes they don't have deadly consequences. I hope that the city and state will look to see if changes can be made to prevent the next person that makes the same mistake from dying.

Has the Seattle Times given up on journalistic impartiality?

If you ignore all the times it's been used as intended to heap arbitrary stochastic costs on projects, and the rest of the times when the risk of stochastic costs causes developers to not even try, then design review isn't that expensive.

Qagggy!

The architect, trying to win back the crowd, says design review doesn’t cost that much, actually. Says people like me are cherry-picking examples of bad design review experiences.

How is it that the department hadn't figured out how the chain of command works while Barnes was commuting 4 hours from Chicago twice a week?

Katie Campbell, KUOW

Requests for comment from Wilson and other officials went unanswered for almost 24 hours. In the meantime, police sources told KUOW the chief’s chair was effectively empty Thursday morning. Barnes also told The Seattle Times he’d taken the day off.

A friendly reminder that you should view all actions from CM Hollingsworth through the lens that she is running for mayor at the behest of the institutions that supported Bruce Harrell

Hearing from multiple sources now that Seattle City Council is indeed pushing back on Mayor Katie Wilson's decision to remove Police Chief Shon Barnes. Per the city charter, "The Mayor may remove the Chief of Police upon filing a statement of his or her reasons for so doing with the City Council."

I won't wade into the Black Community piece of this, but I'll point out "supporters of public safety and community accountability" is also very loaded. I'd argue safe streets orgs are supporters of public safety, but haven't been included in this discussion either.

Erica C. Barnett

Context: A group claiming to represent Seattle's entire "Black community" is holding a rally at city hall, saying that the firing of Police Chief Shon Barnes is a "civil rights" issue. Right-wing commentators like Jonathan Choe have eagerly gobbled up this narrative and are promoting it.

It was really cool to see the Downtown Sounds street festival in Bellingham yesterday. Really makes me wish we could do this type of thing on Rainer Ave.

I am uncomfortable with what appears to be the Seattle Times take on the shooting in the Seattle Center which is that we need to be "realistic" and add security expense to every public event.
