Seattle deserves a real voice in choosing its next Police Chief. We’ll create a search committee that reflects the diversity of our city and builds a public engagement process that gives residents a meaningful role in defining what we look for in our next chief. More details on that to come.

Enforce speed limits tonight queen? 👀

I just want one who's not hostile to Seattle values. And who's willing to steer the department in the direction of Seattle values. Especially, someone willing to let the Care team perform its function.

I agree, and I'm sure you will make the right decision soon. If I may, the person should already be a part of the community and a resident of #Seattle. Good luck.

Seattle deserves a mayor who is experienced and qualified for the job. Who started working on a crisis communications plan on day one. That’s not you. RESIGN.

Why is he getting a crap-ton of money?

Boomer, boomer, boomer… white, white, white.

Our last three nominal full time police chiefs have had no control over officers, send very funny Ewok cards while having wildly inappropriate relationships and sexually harassing people, or don't live here, say homophobic things and get paid almost a million dollars to fuck off.

Maybe he received the very funny Ewok card? Either way that card is tons of stores and as much as I dud smile to see it, I think we also had to pay millions of dollars on getting people to fuck off for that one too.

Alternatively, I nominate myself for chief of police because I could fuck around for a couple years, not do any work with a left perspective, before getting fired and pocketing a few mil.

This. Just fire all the SPD officers and commit to community defense.

Ответ для cyranothe2nd (she/her)

Nonsense . Any " Community defense " will turn in to " Roof top Koreans " as seen in the Rodney_King riots of Los_Angeles . Police exist to protect businesses . Hiring a Kyle_Rittenhouse impersonator to replace police at business venues is a bad idea .

Ответ для Michael Dimitri Richard ⚛🇺🇲

What do you think community defense is? Because I would define it as an organized effort by a specific community to police their neighborhood. What Kyle Rittenhouse did was not that.

Worker. Renter.

🚨Chiefs have constantly failed over and over. The problem is clearly the selection process and the people involved. Mayor Wilson is cleaning up the mess of people like Kettle, Rivera, Hollingsworth et al.

Business Groups and "Neighborhood Councils" should have less say in our selection. Especially interest groups who get funding from public safety spending.

How about just choosing the best available person for the job?

Wherever he comes from make sure he moves his whole family to Seattle so he doesn't have the excuse of not doing his job because of a commute.

Don’t pay a severance. He doesn’t deserve it!!!!

Former Seattle police Chief Shon Barnes will receive roughly $700,000 for resigning from the Seattle Police Department, according to his resignation letter.

A police chief who cares about traffic violence and safety would be nice. As a pedestrian and cyclist cops in cop cars are the most dangerous drivers I encounter, and the SPD currently does not care in the slightest about drivers that endanger pedestrians and cyclists.

Great use of taxpayer money Mayor Wilson: Former Seattle police Chief Shon Barnes will receive roughly $700,000 for resigning from the Seattle Police Department, according to his resignation letter.

you just ran the chief out for no valid reason other than to cover your ass for your ineptitude, and now have to lower your expectations for the next chief because of the diminishing appeal the job holds for any actual qualified potential candidates.

Chief not being around for any major incident here because theyre living out of state is a very valid reason to tell them to fuck off. They should be required to live here in the city of seattle full time. Not goldbar. Not bellevue. Not monroe. Not sammamish.

It would be one thing if they were you know on a normal vacation like a few weeks a year normal people get but they never really moved here. I want someone with both feet in the door.

Ответ для Maggie K

you do know that many law enforcement officers live outside the city or county of their jurisdiction right? you also know that Shon Barnes wasn’t back at home when the shooting occurred right? you also know that he’s been back home 4 times total since march? and, that it’s in his contract too?

Ответ для the gentlemanly drinker

Yes and that still sucks. His response has still sucked. And rank and file should need to live here but at minimum department heads should have to live here to understand the actual local issues.

Ответ для Maggie K

his apartment is in the city so he was actually doing just that and simply exercising employee rights negotiated in his contract. if you don’t like the terms blame the people who signed off on that agreement, but not the employee for taking PTO. his reaction to the reporter wasn’t appropriate.

Ответ для the gentlemanly drinker

I do blame Bruce for that thanks. But also his response still has sucked on many issues.

Ответ для Maggie K

you can blame Bruce for hiring him, but Katie was the one who chose to retain him. hard to blame one and not the other if one had a problem with Shon Barnes to begin with.

Ответ для the gentlemanly drinker

Im happy Katie has corrected her mistake of allowing him to stay around. All you can do sometimes is fix forward.

Ответ для Maggie K

Many officers cannot afford to live in Seattle and so commute in from Kent, Buckley, etc. Having said that, at the chief’s salary, he/she should be able to find something in Seattle he/she can afford.

Ответ для Mary Fern

his apartment was in Seattle, and in true Seattle fashion he complained about the price of rent.

they tend to have families.

Ответ для Mary Fern

If they cant afford it on that salary then what the fuck are the rest of us doing?

Ответ для the gentlemanly drinker

Hard to run him out of town when he doesn’t even live here 🤷🏻‍♀️. He’s had one foot out of town.

Ответ для 🪶🦅🇵🇸

he was at the NOBLE conference. the most prominent and prestigious conference for black law enforcement officers in the country. i would hope the now ‘resigned’ police chief of Seattle, who is black, would be attendance. seems important.

Ответ для the gentlemanly drinker

Okay… he still doesn’t live in this city and I think that was the problem. I don’t think it mattered what his skin color is.

Ответ для 🪶🦅🇵🇸

skin color doesn’t matter to the circumstances in Seattle - it was germane to the conference, which is why i mentioned it. the mayor doesn’t think residency is a problem though because the interim police chief - Andre Sayles - also resides in Illinois, but doesn’t live in the city when in town.

most were not sustained or resolved. also included in the article, a wave of negative yelp reviewers filing complaints simply from watching the television over his confrontation with the reporter. and, “it’s also not known whether any of them factored into the mayor’s decision.”

Resident of Seattle should be a prerequisite

We need to hire somebody who will take a good look at what the police are supposed to do, what they actually do, then fire them all and replace them with new departments of non-cop specialists who will do what we want them to do.

We need a chief with the imagination and leadership skills to utilize the CARE team as intended by the citizens who asked for it.

Maybe should just promote somebody from within the department as opposed to searching far and wide for some “ savior “ who won’t do shit and will cost you millions in severance 🥴🤷🏻‍♂️

yeah.....nope.

would love to see a chief who emphasizes traffic safety. I've seen more ppl run red lights in the last 5 years than I did in my first 45 years of life. I've seen cops do it. The speed limit is 25 on MLK and cars routinely drive 45 past our house.

Get someone local!!!

Start by requiring that they LIVE FULL TIME IN THE CITY.
