I agree that survey questions asking only about the identity facet of sexual orientation (as opposed to, say, asking about identity, desire, & behaviour) are less robust & nuanced, but in a survey mostly about something else w 1 Q for sexl orient, I tend to agree that identity is the best of these.

Sure, experiences shape how people understand their identity but I don’t think we can blame the survey for that. (We can blame PRRI methods for frequently conflating sexual orientation and gender identity, though.)

I don’t think this is accurate, Sam—or else I am misunderstanding what you are trying to say here. I believe they asked how people identified, not what experiences they have had. PRRI also famously tends to suggest that sexual orientation (as least LGBTQ orientations) can be changed.
