Neal Stephenson on why writing by hand is good for your brain and how to do it. Schools reducing lessons in handwriting cursive is maybe the biggest educational blunder of the past 20 years or so. By handwriting you combine motorcortex with abstractions & "engrave" knowledge. What a skill to have!
By Cory Doctorow (GPG 0xBF3D9110957E5F4C)As a reader, my enjoyment of your novel is the same whether it was dictated, typed on an Underwood Noiseless, keyed into a word processor, or scratched out with a fountain pen: nealstephenson.substack.com/p/writing-by... 5/
If there was one chimp in the forest who kept hoarding all the nuts, the other chimps wouldn't sit around talking about market realities affecting the nut supply, they'd go and batter fuck out of him with sticks
A thread on special editions, luxury books, and publishing history: In 1903, J. M. Dent created Everyman’s Library, intended as a cheap line of hardbacks to make a classical education accessible as mass literacy rates were on the rise.
Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.
What bends me the most are the people who sagely say "the climate's changing all the time, earth has hit these temps before." Yeah, in an era of prehistory that could not support human life.
MY WIFE BOOKED ME A MASSAGE. THE WOMAN ASKED WHERE I HOLD MY TENSION. I SAID I DO NOT HOLD TENSION I STORE IT. SHE TOUCHED ONE SHOULDER AND I SAW MY GRANDFATHER. HE WAS DISAPPOINTED. FORTY MINUTES LEFT

an ideologically driven effort to destroy an independent institution and replace its serious and broad-minded approach to american history with MAGA slop
We don't talk enough about The Lost Rubbish of Alexandria. Demetrius's 30 tiresome books on 60 lines from Homer. Didymus' made-up gossip about dead poets. ("Ought to be unlearned," wrote Seneca.) Nicander's remedies that did more harm than good. Lynceus' guide to annoying fishmongers. Mid or worse.
sarah jeongit's stuff like that that makes me really worry about the continuity of culture in a time of decreasing literacy and devaluation of knowledge and attribution. but on the other hand, i've also seen the scholarly suggestion somewhere that the lost six might have been kind of mid
There are going to be so many shocking & scandalous exclusives in my forthcoming book about who caused the apocalypse. It's going to do big numbers at makeshift trading posts. Come hear me read it aloud over a shortwave radio near you this holiday season.
this comparison leaves out a key point: the Edsel sold roughly twice the Cybertruck's volume at a time when the overall car market was just 6m units/year instead of the current 16m units/year that makes the Cybertruck the much, much bigger flop, hands down
Anne CroninFREE LINK > Tesla Cybertruck sales have been so weak that it's challenging Ford's Edsel to become the biggest automotive flop of all time. Great tale by Bethany Benjamin > www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

MARA9I feel like people have forgotten that ad blockers weren't popular because people just wanted to get something for free, it's because we can't trust ads not to fuck up our computers. If we still just had quiet simple banner ads or sideboard ads, ad blockers wouldn't have gotten as much traction.
YIKES BIKES at this takedown of Caraway, Our Place and Great Jones (ie the pink aesthetic cookware Instagram knows my heart craves and I’m always tempted to buy: “The materials science on that coating is peer-reviewed and brutal”

At the end there’s a list of brands that are still good quality and family owned, so unlikely to get hollowed out from under their good names. But it’s just…sad. They closed a 132 year old Pyrex factory in Pennsylvania
