Today is the birthday of artist Ken Bald (Aug. 1, 1920-March 17, 2019). He worked for several publishers in the Golden Age, including Timely/Marvel, where he cocreated Namora & Sun Girl. He also drew the newspaper strip Dr. Kildare for over two decades & the Dark Shadows strip.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

Someday we need to get an oral history of the development hell this film fell into. Because it's such a simple concept with an excellent actor cast in the lead. No matter what else may have been going on with Marvel's films over the last few years, this one seemed like a slam dunk.

I'm gonna keep reposting this until Larry Hama's dream finally comes true.

Since it's the last day of #WesternComicsMonth, I'm going with this Tonto issue because the cover by Ernest Nordli is just so beautifully painted.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist George Wildman (July 31, 1927-May 22, 2016). An artist, writer, & editor, he is most known for his long association with the Popeye comic book series (from 1969 to 1985).

If there is one thing we don't need in our house, it's more coffee mugs, but when I saw this at Savers earlier for just a buck and half, I couldn't resist.
