Canada primarily supplies the US market. The US is purposefully trying to destroy large parts of the Canadian economy. It is ridiculous to say that the possible views of non-existent non-US energy consumers matter here. www.ctvnews.ca/world/trumps...

Whatever his intent, Mark Carney’s overall strategy will almost inevitably — a word I rarely use as a political scientist — deliver Canada into a deeper relationship with the United States. This is because its two prongs — diversification and appeasement — are irreconcilable. 1/4

Blayne Haggart

This is worse than destructive; it's embarrassing. Carney is subordinating every single Canadian policy, not even to US aggression, but to the mere threat of economic pain.

This is what vassalization looks like: Adjusting one's policies to fit the whims of your de facto ruler. I'm not sure how much more evidence people will need to recognize that Carney's endgame is deeper integration with the United States, which necessarily entails vassalization.

Imagine the money Carney could save if he simply bit the bullet, shuttered Parliament and outsourced every single policy decision to Trump and his cronies. It's redundant to have a supposedly independent Parliament that's simply going to be overruled by Trump's viceroy if it steps out of line.

I think so too. The most regressive, pro-corporate PM in my lifetime but continues to fool huge numbers of voters into thinking he's progressive. Now they defend everything he does, no matter how bad.

Mike Cook

I think the carney government may go down in history as the biggest con ever pulled on the Canadian people. A literal wolf in sheep’s clothing, taking advantage of a terrified nation to get around the deranged far right and instal a conservative corporate first government. He’s dooming us.

They failed to understand business as usual no longer works at this point in history, that’s why they lost & will continue to. Business as usual has brought us to catastrophe.

Ryan Cronkhite

The Democrats have always been the "business as usual" party. It's certainly not great but it's better than the current situation.

Mike was a significant person in the British Columbia Search and Rescue community. He helped shape BCSARA into a professional volunteer organization. All SAR members perform better because of his commitment and efforts. He will be greatly missed.

We chose to concede. Again. The bridge is secondary. We chose to concede. Again. It destroys the faith we have that the government has red lines. Concessions are poisonous if we gain nothing from them. So, Canada lost.

We need government grocery stores in Canada. The big grocery stores in Canada have gouged Canadians for far too long.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani

At our municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.

Thinking about this again, I see people every day saying something like "Canada needs to" followed by ideas of collective action, bolstering social safety nets, and preparing for a rocky independence. Actions that are in reality opposite of what the gov is doing. Good ideas are out there.

Blayne Haggart

New from me, in which I invite the federal government and others to abandon the belief that the way to deal with a bad-faith partner who ripped up your trade agreement is another, better trade agreement. Canada needs a reality-based strategy. And a Royal Commission is the best way to develop it.

In Canada, Conservative and Liberal governments alike have pumped money to our oligarchs in the same hopes 👇🏼

Robert Reich

For decades, Republicans in Washington have told us that tax cuts would trickle down to workers. Instead, wealth and power have accumulated in the hands of the richest 1% at the expense of the rest of us. Trickle-down economics was never supposed to work. It was a hoax.

The more I think about Carney's foreign policy decisions, the more I believe he views values as a luxury or a liability Values are at best, a nice-to-have, once economic fundamentals are secure. At worst, they're a risk and we get punished for them progressdevelopment.substack.com/p/that-davos...
