Oh dear, now there is Loeb discourse. For me, the huge value of having a large corpus of facing-translation classical texts is for those dozens of times a year when you need to check, "did this author say this?" "where in this work is this passage I vaguely remember?" +

Now I'm reading up on the sensory-friendly screenings I've seen advertised and it sounds like they *do* lower the volume, and skip the previews, too! I think I might try one of those. AMC does this and they are the major chain in my area.

At the beginning of our service the Sunday Warden (one of the vestry on duty) gives a brief welcome, overview of safety protocols, bathroom and quiet room locations, etc., and then the prelude starts. The livestream starts when the prelude starts. Announcements proper remain after the Peace.

...in the context of a shifting UK English accent landscape (decline of RP, rise of Estuary English, etc) there's a subset of voice actors who are neither native nor professionally trained speakers of that stagey RP, because it's basically dead, who nonetheless feel they need to attempt it.

...but their narrating accents sound to me (an American who's lived in the UK) like Americans faking it. I hear this especially in fantasy. Clearly it's a certain style they're either being asked to assume or are bringing to the job and getting the go-ahead for. But it makes me wonder whether...

I've had good luck with YT videos but I tend to seek out academics or other experts with good video skills, or be fed their content by an unusually smart algorithm. I do bail in <15 seconds if the voice, cadence, etc. are not good.

I will suggest my local public library get it. It comes out August 18th. I'm sure they wouldn't buy it if they already owned the previous recording, but according to the catalogue they do not. They do seem to be pretty receptive to suggestions. And then I could recommend it to parish friends!

Libro.fm is not offering it for a credit, anyway, only for (too much) money. If my library gets it I'll listen to some of it.

Hmm...I just went to Audible to look up which narrator I had heard and I see that McCullough himself is issuing a new recording, reading it himself! That might suggest he recognized how inaccurate the previous reading was. I'm not sure I'd relisten to 52 hours of it, and it looks like +

The audio narrator of Diarmaid MacCulloch's A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years somehow managed to mispronounce three thousand years of technical terms and proper names. I stuck with it because I was on a long road trip, but how they let that go forward...🤦‍♀️

Same world, different reader. So not one of those cases where they switch narrator midstream for the same characters, but still jarring. (In fairness, in several cases of the latter type it's because the series was so long the original narrator died!)

Yes, the voice, and also if somebody is reaching for an accent and not achieving it, it's just more and more intrusive for me. I'm sure a lot of listeners don't notice nuances of accent but I do.

But now I am on to Detective Aunty by Uzma Jalaluddin, narrated by Deepti Gupta, who plays Javadi's scary mom on The Pitt! Good book, excellent narrator! She has a deep, resonant voice and a command of accents. And the book is set in Toronto (well, Scarborough). Recommended!
