People, I am so tired. I spent about 20 minutes reading about the script of Corbie and did kind of focus a bit but was not energized. I don't feel sick but I think the chronic pain is getting to me. Just discovered what's been going on in my knee for weeks is that my kneecap dislocated,

I decided I needed McGurk's collected essays, which had been sitting in my Abe basket for a long time. Not too much of a splurge, actually: it was under $30. Shipping was a bit on the pricey side, but compared to what Variorum edd. usually go for, a bargain.

Pulling this out to ask a separate question. Does this—no experience with teaching Homer in translation before coming to the US— mean that in your home systems students ONLY read Homer if they can read Greek? That seems rather limiting, and a very small readership.

Logeion Greek-Latin

I found it very relatable in a recent interview that she said she only got worried about translations once teaching in the US. I too had not grown up reading in translation and was frustrated with translations that the students couldn't actually read and that didn't even sound like Homer to me.

Between this and Greek pendant script and a certain Insular leaf with a different sort of weird ruling, I'm thinking I might need to write something on ruling. When I can go visit MSS IRL again, that is.

Carin Ruff

@liber-ray.bsky.social I'd never noticed the ruling before. Is it consistently right through the written line (or rather, vice-versa) as in your second image here?

Oh, interesting! Grandparents in the '50s: English teacher & insurance salesman on one side, PR agent x 2 on the other. Great-grandfathers in the '20s: 1 in family import-export biz, 2 dry goods salesmen, 1 steelworker. G-grandmothers all housewives but one ran a boarding house as well.

Beckett the Delicate Ecopouf

My grandparents were all working in the mid century, not the 20s, so I'd be: a maintenance worker for the City of Detroit a housewife a furnace installer (died of asbestos exposure) an orderly at an asylum My g. grands 100 years ago were: trucker dairy farmer cherry farmer steelworker housewives

One thing I love about Marseille's notaries—especially this one, Laurent Aycard—is that they tend to doodle or decorate their registers and the initial capitals of their acts (in the long-form extensoirs, at least). Aycard organized his registers w/ letters. This is the beginning of "Register O."

It looks like WNC is in a fundraising flail again. I'd have thought they were doing pretty well with "Our bishop is a badass with a Gospel message" plus "we still have earthquake repairs to finish," but no.* ⚓ (*No need to 'splain me the difference between EDOW and PECF.)

Well, this is timely. The 1977 Iphigenia (in Greek) is, at least for the moment, on YouTube in its entirety. This movie made a huge impression on me when I was a young teen. youtu.be/o81Ehf3XFL4?...

Why is the top joint of my non-dominant, little-used thumb suddenly painful and slightly swollen? (The one closest to my fingernail.)

Today's accomplishments: I emptied and flattened two boxes that have been in the garage for months! I made reservations for a Sept trip to visit friends in MA! I corresponded with one of my friends about his manuscripty chapter! And I'm on track to accomplish a post office errand before I collapse.

Carin Ruff

I VACUUMED! Could this portend actually focusing on friends' interesting manuscripty chapters? Maybe!

I used to go to movies here with my dad quite a bit because it was one of only a small handful of accessible theaters in DC. My memory is that they had an elevator down from the entrance level to the auditorium, and the entrance from the street, as you can see here, was barrier-free.

Tenleytown & Around

Washingtonian Magazine has a nostalgic look back at the Friendship Heights movie theater that used to be at the now-closed Crunch exercise location. It was a movie theater on Wisconsin Avenue from 1965 to 2005, first as K-B and then as Cineplex Odeon. #FriendshipHeights
