That basic problem -- the problem of the information environment, which I've banged on about for 20+ years now -- is upstream of *everything* else. There's no simple fix. It's certainly not going to be fixed with clever word choice or policy proposals. You have to shift the deep mythologies.

I don't expect constant agreement with Tom or his idea of what a good candidate is, but the broad effort of keeping or restoring the democracy is what's important.

This list and its spirit are the kind of conservatism we (the left, liberals, whatever; the rest of the democracy coalition) can and need to ally with and reaffirm. The loftier emanations of no.s 1 and 2 include freedom, equality, the vision of a multiracial democracy, the heart of left values.

Yet another part of Trump's effort to rig the elections. This is a blatantly illegal federal intrusion into state voting rules. It should be emphatically rejected.

This is the single most important thing for the American electorate to understand right now. All other policy preferences, political aesthetic tastes, dear and darling issues are moot and access to them can only be restored on the other end of a lasting small d democratic victory for the country.

I disagree with Tom (and his associates at the Atlantic) on plenty but all of that pales before the existential crisis of American democracy.

Right now, everyone faces a hard binary choice between authoritarianism and democracy. If you don’t think it’s a binary choice and that because of your issue or issues that both sides are the same, then you’re part of the problem.

They are plotting to steal ballots so they can steal the election. Their plan after they steal the election is to take the rest of our rights away and enslave us.

My kingdom for an American left that prizes substantive gains over ideologically onanistic aesthetics.

If this was a dude being relentlessly bullied in high school and that was your reaction you’d be one of the bullies and not in the cute “bullying works” way but in the real, shitty, abusive way.

I know I’m out of step with this website on this (and that’s the website’s problem, not mine) but I find it genuinely repulsive that there’s a guy who’s a designated hate object and even the people who admit there’s derangement syndrome about him is real say 95% of the time that it’s his own fault.

The fact that a joint technology program for missile defense, cyber, and AI, is being portrayed as “merging militaries” by so many accounts, and often with similar responses of uncritical outrage shows both the dangers of social media and how primed people are to believe libels based on the target.
