I remember this insane story from a few years ago. Ebay employees trying to shut down this couple's little newsletter that was criticizing the company went completely batshit: sending them live spiders, posting ads for sex parties at their address, tailing their car, sending them death threats.

I think that’s often how trends work tbh: there is some organic tendency shift over time, and then an interested company/trade group/lobby puts their weight behind making it faster and larger. It’s not just that both things can be true, but that both usually are by the time most people notice

Yeah imo they are a genuine inflection or acceleration point for a handful of things but mostly seems overblown bc GLP-1 stuff gets high engagement

Yeah if anything I think keto/paleo fit the timeline for this trend muuuuuuch better, if we’re looking for a dietary point of origination

I don’t think this is a good understanding of the time horizon of this trend or of how GLP-1s affect the palatability of rich foods

Yeah I think Kerrygold’s marketing push was the thing that was at the back of my mind when I answered earlier this morning. Also the keto people have been pushing butter since the early/mid-2010s, and a lot of their beliefs have become sorta mainstream

the (excellent) podcast Criminal did an episode earlier this year in part about what was in American’s food before government regulation and I can’t stress to you enough that regulation is the only reason we’re all alive to joke on here about diarrhea lettuce

I do not know this for sure but in general when something like this happens a lobby or trade group’s marketing wing tends to be in there somewhere, pushing to make a real shift (or at least curiosity) ubiquitous

Also like…this is what family annihilators look like in public until they annihilate their families. There is not some trove of photos that shows them as we now know them to be. This is what turns monstrous. Fine to expect the public to sit with that tension imo!

This is, imo, why the idea that these people are motivated solely by profit is never going to be enough to help you fully understand what is going on in tech. Yeah, they love money, but if it’s all they were pursuing, they would also be keenly interested in *you*. They’re not.

This has been an issue in tech for so long that the failure to correct it is really telling about the industry’s inherent lack of capacity for introspection. It selects for and rewards antisociality and then wonders why people don’t like and trust it.
