Turns out that food companies were only checking their food because the government told them to, which is exactly why we need government regulations.

This has been an issue in tech for so long that the failure to correct it is really telling about the industry’s inherent lack of capacity for introspection. It selects for and rewards antisociality and then wonders why people don’t like and trust it.

there is a doctrine of product development out of silicon valley that goes something like "i think this thing would be cool to have for myself, i'm sure other people *must* also want it too, so i'll make it and they will fund its development and also it will obviously be a blockbuster"
