It really kind of blows my mind how readily too many people accepted mass surveillance as an unavoidable, mundane, and immutable fact of life. It didn't always used to be that way and it still isn't.

New: Chicagoans held a small vigil on Tuesday for Corey Ruiz, who police shot and killed in Madison, WI last Wednesday. The vigil followed an outpouring of community outrage in Madison over the past week, as hundreds took to the street to demand justice for this latest instance of police violence.

Among other things, this piece highlights why we should've been teaching media literacy, how advertising/propaganda work, etc for the last 30+ years. It's not a panacea for patriarchy, bigotry, or capitalism, but I feel like it might've helped stem the tide of some of this mess.
