i think living in a moment this absolutely rotten is gonna be a downer in ways that feel to our minds like tangibly worse living conditions even if those are different things people blame "the economy" because that's what sounds smart to say but the thing they're actually feeling is cultural

As far as I can tell, the failed yet continuing Trickle Down Economics policies that helped lead us to this point is as much cultural as it is the economy. Not sure you can separate the two.

Yeah, I think this is why people should be cautious about flippantly dismissing memetic discourse around stuff like the decline of third spaces or the loneliness (not just men!) epidemic If you have alternative ideas, I'll hear them, but something is obviously dysfunctional culturally

We've had Trump-Pandemic-Trump. And people are rightly feeling that this has been shitty and you're right it just gets plopped on "economy bad", when it hasn't really been that bad for most people. I'm going to get piled on aren't I? Block finger ready!

For this to be true trump would also have to make his maga supporters feel miserable. Which I think could be true. A media diet of hate and grievance could make you miserable even if Your grievances are being indulged.

Good guess - but they asked those who anticipate collapse why, and "Climate change and overconsumption" was the plurality response in all five - neck-and-neck with "a gradual degradation of conditions"! "Uncontrolled migration", "civil war/tensions" and "extremist attacks" combined had less support!

a lot of people understand, deep down, that things have gotten a lot worse in the last 2 years but they don't want to admit that, either because they don't know why, or because they were already saying that pre-2024 America was a shithole in the first place
