Good news for #BikeHFX: paving on Windsor between North and Almon is finished, and the Windsor St bike lanes are smooth again Great news: the bike lanes were widened a bit when they repainted them, which is great because those lanes felt like bike sewers But also...

...now that the right (bike) lane is wider, drivers are treating the dashed line regions as right turning lanes, as I clearly illustrate:

That is pretty typical unfortunately, and I think that is what the dashed nature of those lines is actually supposed to indicate. That they can use them that way :( . Our laws basically suck for protecting cyclists, or even pedestrians.

Just want to confirm what Chris says. The city intends for the dashed line to communicate to drivers that they *should* use the bike lane as a turning lane, or as a through lane to get around cars turning left. The city designed those bike lanes to fail.

The cynic in me says we’re never getting a protected lane on Windsor because it will be seen as taking a R-turn lane from drivers. 🤮

Yuuup.

It’s a critical spine for the bike network, so if they’re not going to put protected lanes on Windsor, it’s time they rethink that whole side of the network. I feel the same way about us never getting Morris. These aren’t easy problems to solve, but the network is already years & years overdue

At this point, it feels like we are never getting a minimum connected grid.. it will be forever, tiny bits of disconnected protected lanes. Maybe when/if the provincial government gets overturned, we get rid of Andy stop-bikelanes Fillmore, and elect more bike friendly councilors.

Ответ для Chris Geroux

Maybe we will get that, but just seems like a lot needs to align to make that happen.

I think when they finish the strategic corridors (Herring Cove Rd, Bedford Hwy, Portland/Cole Harbour Rd) there will likely be even more push to finish the peninsula network. I think we can get council there. But I worry about Bill 24 and the precedent being set by the province to grab more power

Will whatever government comes after Tim Houston’s reverse those decisions? I kinda have my doubts.

Ответ для Terri

yeah.. it isn't great.

It doesn't feel like it, but it is safer to have drivers merge to the right and turn rather than keeping them out of the bike lanes and have them turn from farther out, where a) they can turn at higher speed, and b) they overtake and then "right hook" someone on a bike. The lesser of two evils. 🫤

What about a leading bike+pedestrian green light combined with a no-turn-on-red for cars? We have some of those around the city, and they feel pretty safe to me in all 3 transportation modes. Maybe that's a bigger hit to car throughput.

Ответ для Danny Doucette

Absolutely, that would be way safer. And green paint the "conflict zone" through the intersection.

Ответ для Tara Goddard

Interesting points Tara, thanks. What we've experienced with other "shared" spaces like our LSBs is that drivers will just hog all the space & we (people clycling) will lose any advantage at intersections to get out in front. Stuck behind right turning vehicles as our LPI/bike light comes & goes 😮‍💨

Oh, for sure, I am not advocating for that infrastructure, just that it is incrementally safer than the other. If there is enough volume, a dedicated bike signal would be helpful, but even a leading one would help. If the side street is small, I'm a fan of raised elements (like a raised crossing)

Ответ для Tara Goddard

that force drivers to slow further to make the turn. Giving drivers the idea that turning at speed is a right was one of the biggest errors in transportation engineering.

Ответ для Danny Doucette

That's the current set up for that intersection, is it not? At least it is on the Almon leg! Notably, the bike lane is not just used by right turning drivers. It's used by drivers going straight, as they get around left turning drivers.

Ответ для Scott Edgar

I don't know this for certain, but with so many other laws being pretty anti-cyclist, like I just learned, that while it is technically illegal to park in a bike lane... it is kind of ok/legal to leave your vehicle sitting in a bike lane while you unload, like WTF.

Ответ для Chris Geroux

Also you can kill someone by dooring and then only get a ticket for something completely unrelated. But you can go to jail for smashing a car window in protest of our awful premier. Our laws protect the wealthy, the powerful, and who gives a sh$t if a person on a bike gets killed.

Ответ для Scott Edgar

Better than having them turn right while you're trying to go straight and they're looking left (always)

Ответ для Scott Edgar

That was my first thought too. But the dashed lines are actually there for the bus stop. At this same intersection the southbound lane is not dashed.

Ответ для Danny Doucette

Not the point, I know, but I do love this illustration!

Ответ для Danny Doucette

Of course they are. A few tactical flex posts in that spot might be in order.

Ответ для Danny Doucette

Thanks for the heads up, what a dangerous way to force bikes and cars into a confusing space

Ответ для Danny Doucette

I don't think it ever stopped them tbh

Ответ для Danny Doucette

This is my daily commute, and i noticed the bike lane widening as well. Could it mean that the Windsor Street protected infra is coming? I thought it was originally slated as a 2026 project.

i like this!

Hey Danny can I use this photo please in a blog? Sorry, I can't privately message you

Sure thing! It's from google street view, clearly

Thanks for sharing. I am so SO frustrated that repaving has taken place on Windsor & Ahern this summer without improving (adding) appropriate & IMP-consistent cycling infrastructure. Like WTAF @hfxgov.bsky.social? Reinforcing your car-brained priorities while ignoring your own plans! #BikeHFX
