When urbanists take pictures of a Paris street (like Rue de Rivoli) showing all the people on bikes now taking advantage of protected infrastructure, it’s not just because we “like bikes.” It’s because we’re picturing the gridlock if they were driving cars. And the public cost, pollution, noise…
After discovering @bicycledutch.bsky.social, a Tsinghua University professor advocated for the fietsstraat: where cyclists are the main users and cars are guests. Today, that idea has spread across Beijing: Hundreds of kilometres of bike-priority streets now form the backbone of the city’s network.
I hope I get to move back home sooner rather than later, and I hope I get to be part of this movement in growth of cycling in Halifax. The thought of buying a car(!🤮!) or relying on transit if I do move back is pretty abhorrent.
JillianThere’s a quiet culture change happening in Halifax. I think it’s most obvious at #KidicalMassHfx, where you can see “all the cool bikes,” but it’s also evident on an average Sunday afternoon at the pool. The culture of family cycling and cargo bikes is growing steadily and it’s wonderful to see!
Speaking of prov budget cuts, can someone explain to me how one goes from this in 2013 to being part of a government that cut both 100% of the funding for a parent support program in Spryfield meant to keep kids out of the foster care system and also cut funding for Foster Families of NS in 2026?

Great timing as I just reported an incident from the morning where I was using the cycling infrastructure as intended yet a car cut in front of me (in a bike & bus through / vehicle right turn only lane to go straight around a car turning left) and I had to slam my breaks to avoid rear-ending them 🙃
