Just an observation, but with the lower density and cheaper price, wouldn't sodium ion battery storage for industrial use be the place for production to begin?

With regards to manufacturing, China is doing most of it while the US doesn't have a single entity manufacturing yet. I heard Sodium batteries don't need rare earths like lithium & it's baffling why venture cap hasn't flooded money yet instead of saturating tech calling everything AI when it's not.

Economics makes people modify their behaviors. We need commuter batteries first, and offer long range batteries as an option.

You're missing the point, sodium is not a good candidate for cars. But it's an extremely promising candidate for BESS. It could be the missing ingredient to get us above 90% renewable electricity.

There are millions of EVs on US roads with sub-300 range. I just upgraded to something with about 230 miles and it feels positively decadent. The 80-miler I got in 2017 is still on the road.

Then don't use them for cars. A safe, cheap, thermally tolerant, if bulkier power storage, is perfect for home off peak demand power storage.

The private sector is generally risk averse and often requires the public sector to pave the way (or take on risk) when it comes to foundational technologies. Ex: computers were in the public sector for decades before the private sector considered them a viable technology for commercializing.

I'm wondering what the impact of a sodium-ion battery pack in every home would have for the grid. 🤔 Is it possible this might be a standard install in a new home in a very short time?

I believe they also are cooler & don't catch fire.

This is why we’re leasing our first EV, when in the past we always bought and held our gas cars. The technology improvement curve with EVs is just too steep to be locked in.

Those are for very low power electronics. They’re also decades old technology. They are not remotely applicable to this conversation.

People used to argue against renewables because of the cost of lithium. My argument was always that cheaper materials would be found because that is always how economics works. And here we are less than 3 years later.

Probably not, because they're mostly the same companies. CATL has the best sodium batteries to date, and also the best lithium batteries.

THAT'S why the arguments against lithium were always anti-environmental BS. Without moving towards renewables and batteries - even with the environmental hazards of lithium - there'd be no market for developing something better. We HAVE to ditch fossil fuels, regardless of short-term risk.

Advances in battery tech are our greatest hope. We have abundant energy to tap into. We need to be able to harvest and store it.

Thank goodness. So many new science breakthroughs never make it to production.

Every answer may not work for every application but every answer is a step forward.

If you haven't read up on it, check out the irish CO^2 battery project for systems level stoarge. It is going to be a web of such solutions, not one single tech breakthrough I think.

Sodium ion batteries are not susceptible to thermal runaway. That's the process by which lithium batteries can burn catastrophically - now keep in mind - that's extremely uncommon and a very overblown threat in pop culture, and still it's very meaningful that with sodium it's not a risk.

Agree sodium looks more promising, we need to be cautious when assessing this option. Extensive testing will determine if metallic sodium is produced as a result of Thermal Runaway (TR) at 400 degrees C or any other catastrophic event. Metallic sodium is explosive if it comes in contact with water.

But lithium sounds way more futuristic

I feel like a minor genius. Last year I got new batteries for my off-grid power system & decided to stick with the lead-acid type because 1. they're among the most successfully recycled, 2. I don't like the ethics of lithium mining and 3. I figured something better had to be coming. Yay!

When we get beyond rare earth batteries I will embrace this far more. It seemed as if we were replacing one sort of geopolitical risk with another. And rare earth mining is damaging.

I could easily see this becoming thing you see more in Europe than North America. Sodium-Ion is well suited for cold weather, cheaper, BUT not as good on energy density compared to solid state lithium. But that maters less given Europe's infrastructure.

North America has lots of places to put grid scale batteries, a coast, and a solid manufacturing base. Europe will probably adopt this sooner and more widely, but that's mostly because of the history (US led opposition to progress handed China a lead in lithium) and the present (clown president).

Not really. Most of this thing soda ash. And most of that is mined in Wyoming. Huge deposits there of a mineral called Trona. China has to synthesize as part of a way to make fertilizer. That they are beating the US with a supply disadvantage says a lot.
