What I'm taking from this is how vague and meaningless these genAI disclosures are allowed to be. You really have no idea what they used it for. Could be textures, could be concept art, could be they just used a transcription tool for meetings. The vagueness sucks.

I watched an Argentinian show on Netflix that advertised using generative AI, but it turned out to be a weird thing to please management. The effects team released a video to prove their work, and all people could find was a five or so second snippet. What I'm saying is just leave artists to art.

I'm just assuming that every large studio has developers using coding assistant or claude code at this point. Could be very difficult to prove they didn't

Doesn't matter, any useage of the looting and polluting bobots warrants the nuclear response.

It's the cowardice that does it for me

Mr. Hands is making SuccuDeck 😈🃏

The GenAI disclaimer is somehow always an embarrassing statement like "Our artisans have carefully hand-tweaked their images after running them through the one-armed slop bandit" and never a straightforward "We used Qwen for art and Claude for narrative"

So much software has “AI” in it, from coding to emails to graphics/editing tools that aren’t really any different than the algorithmic tools before them they just got “AI” slapped on as a buzzword. Meaningful disclosures would be like “content that used to be made by humans was generated by AI”

It's always "Oh it was placeholders and inspirations, not something you'll actually see." We don't (just) hate AI because it's ugly. We hate it for the pollution and plagirism. I don't care if you used it to make the whole game, or for a newsletter for the staff. It shouldn't be used at all.

That’s what i was wondering too. Does it mean they generated assets? It could also be that they used ai code generation and assistance. Which i would be mostly fine with. Too vague

The other problem is that while Valve wrote a rule against not properly disclosing AI use, they never updated the Reporting tool. So you can't actually report games for vague/no disclosure. It's the same problem with their hate speech rule. No way to report so the rule basically doesn't exist.

Point still stands that the entire gaming community is generally hostile to AI use in any form in any game, they should feel the wrath of their customers for not listening I'm sorry but it's also fucking SEGA, they deserve it after how loud people have been

They also obviously used it to write the fucking disclosure, so all bets are honestly off on this one.

Meanwhile, a game could have loads of Gen AI but, if they never address it, suffer zero consequences. If it's subtle enough, AI detection tools aren't reliable, so it's all word of mouth if it's AI or not.

Even if they're caught and admit it, it doesn't matter. I tried to refund Crimson Desert for undisclosed AI and didn't get it.

And yet if Steam didn't require disclosure we might never know, since no one else is requiring it. I'm fully on board with assuming the worst until this shit stops.

Ответ для sumokirby (Chris)

You can't report it if someone IS using AI and doesn't disclose it, or at least there isn't an obvious option to do so. It's on honor system alone. There's no real consequences if you don't disclose, as far as I'm aware.

Ответ для shannon//cannon

Or if they just lie about what is AI. A lot of indies write some bs like "I used AI to make status effect symbols." Then you see posts in the forums of them confirming to people well yeah and this art is AI, and some backgrounds because I just hired random artists and some used AI maybe I guess.

Ответ для sumokirby (Chris)

They could also just not disclose it. If it isn't something obvious, they know people will never find out. Shit's fucked.

Ответ для Skops

It wasn’t obvious in The Alters and someone still found out. They didn’t disclose until they got caught. Same thing for Expedition 33 a few months after that.

Ответ для sumokirby (Chris)

It's not even technically a requirement anymore. It's only required if it ships with the game now.

Ответ для sumokirby (Chris)

I can, unfortunately, guarantee you that despite "requiring" disclosure, Steam does absolutely nothing to enforce it as a rule. I was able to spot genAI assets in a game that had no disclosure and even contacted the dev about it, and he just straight up confirmed that he does use genAI and it-

Ответ для Voghelm

quote, "helps him with his creativity". I was thankfully SOMEHOW able to refund the game despite having 10 hours and buying it more than 2 weeks prior at that point, after pestering support multiple times, but there's no genAI disclosure on the page still Shit sucks

Once youre willing to use GenAi at all for any part of development, how am I supposed to trust you didn't use elsewise? It comes off like an addict trying to convince you their use of the vice was inconsequential.

No one means that it is being used to transcribe meetings come on

The more vague the disclosure the more malicious the intent

at least we know it wasn't used in relation to the performers in the game! that sure tells us a lot! (sarcasm, and no matter what i'm not touching a game with ai in it at all)

Ignoring SEGA as a publisher on Steam Get ready to do the same for Capcom And Horii will probably announce they're reanimating his deceased lifelong collaborators for DQXII...

It feels intentional. Gives people room to assume that it’s whatever level of genAI they’re personally comfortable with, I’ve already seen people claiming that this means “they only used AI coding tools” which makes it fine, to them? I think Sega would just say that if it were true.

Ответ для Grim Fandaniel

shows how tech illiterate people are that "oh yeah it's potentially going to be running hallucinated code on your machine" is considered somehow not the worst scenario. Like that's still vague enough not to narrow in on at least safe uses of the tech near a codebase (even if still dubiously ethical)

For all we know they could had wasted 200 bucks on the equivalent of Lorem Ipsum text for how irrational AI implementation has been.... who the fuck knows. It's so annoying.

more like crazy taxidermy

If it's only used for coding, I think genAI, if you run the LLM solely on your own personal dev machine, is actually fine. The game industry should be leading on this, given that essentially every programmer should have a beefy enough GPU to run a useful LLM instead of paying shitty datacenters.

Ответ для Noetic

That plus the vagueness of the disclosure reasonably has people believing they're mashing on cloud tokens instead of paying artists, writers, musicians, and voice actors. They could've avoided that problem twice over

You'd think they wouldn't be vague, considering that "Generative AI" is basically poison at this rate

Публикация скрыта фильтром безопасности.

Yeah, I thought the same. They're always so coy with it. They put their hand in the cookie jar and pretend they didn't take one.

Companies have 0 reasons to be vague unless they're being vague to save their own skin. Evidently SEGA knows that generative AI is looked down upon, but they went ahead with it anyway. SEGA can't be honest with what they used it for because it's probably a lot worse than what the disclosure says.

it's because they know it's shameful

Vague or not, no use of gen AI is acceptable at any point of game development, so I couldn't care less where it's used.

Nah, dissecting this is meaningless. If they really thought about this, and were using something that got co-oped under""ai"", but is actually far older than generative slop. It is ENTIRELY ON THEM TO CLARIFY. I've seen enough of these, if it touched slop engines, it belongs in the trash bin

Disclosure should require disambiguation of the types of AI used, which companies they sourced from, model iterations, whether it was local or cloud AI, images of art and textures. Which stages of development it was used at, whether they used it for placeholders that were then replaced.

Ответ для JayCee Jay

That way I know how loudly to tell them to get fucked.

being specific wouldn't hurt, but I also think it doesn't matter. Any amount is too much so it doesn't really matter in what capacity it's used to me, maybe I'm ignorant of some things, but that's how I feel right now.

I remember when they put a AI disclaimer into Taiko no Tatsujin for having vocaloid in it lmao

Ответ для bramslammin

For having KAFU in the song "phony". That's it. The rest of the songs are made with no AI. The only thing that's AI is vocals and that's about it.

The crazy part, this is still more transparent than other games on Steam have. Expedition 33 and Neverness to Everness both caught having used genAI at some points in development and admitted to it publicly, yet both of them still lack any disclosure on their steam pages at all.

The biggest issue with AI discourse is that the term is such a gigantic umbrella that covers tools like grammar correction and auto transcription all the way to wholesale script and image creation

Waiting for the "placeholder art" statement from a community manager

100% agree. A disclosure should spell out what was done, not look like a PR statement

does it really matter? they used it, so i don't want anything to do with it. don't care how much they used it or for what.

Ответ для sammy

Yes, it does matter. There's a difference between using it for administrative tasks, which is what's happening here vs. what other people have done, which is used to render art and costs people their jobs. I get the frustration over AI, but we also have to be smart about our anger.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

Also so many regular pieces of software have been rebranded as "Artificial Intelligence" I've seen preexisting text to speech software marketet as AI to appease shareholders

Ответ для the legged one

Like I've seen devs say speedtree in the ai disclosure. We don't care if you proc gen shit.

Ответ для the legged one

the most recent taiko game had an AI disclosure because it has vocaloid songs

Ответ для Goofierbrute

no, there is no difference. it is all unethical shit that needs to be boycotted.

..... I'm honestly kind of flattered that you think I'm important enough to make vague threats and are trying to shame me online.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

"administrative tasks" lol you don't even know that that's actually all theyre doing with it.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

We have to be realistic about where the anger comes from, which is a lot different than "smart about it", which means nothing and is *just* as obfuscatory btw. Yes, just saying that something is genAI when it's not is stupid, but "I want absolutely no AI use in my games" is perfectly acceptable.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

Hey, moron, check this out

Ответ для Goofierbrute

No, there isn't. All use of genAI is stealing *someone's* work and destroying the planet.

Ответ для Ɐuska

You're right. And I agree. But not all AI is GenAI.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

Then they must be precise in what they mean. Onus is fully on them.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

"generative AI" is in the screenshot multiple times.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

Hard disagree. It wastes massive amounts of energy, is built on plagirism and pollutes the area around it. I don't care if they're poisoning poor areas for profit or recreationally. I don't want to support a business doing it at all.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

Per Valve's rules you aren't even required to disclose it for administrative tasks or even code generation. Just for assets which appear in the final game or marketing materials.

Ответ для Goofierbrute

no we don't, it has no value, and getting rid of all of it will have no negative outcomes
