The rural folks in my county threw a massive tantrum when the county commission put a new fire station closer to them. They would rather die of a heart attack than occasionally hear a siren, even in the distance.

It was an especially shocking part of Michael Lewis' Fifth Risk where the USDA agent reported mayors asking not to publicize the receipt of funding for hospitals because they didn't want their constituents to know the money came from government funding.

Part of this thread worth considering as well is that no amount of money sent to help them leads them to reject the framing that most of the money is going to inner-city blacks.

A lot of people have never lived in rural America and it's difficult to explain what it's like to them.

At a certain point, elected leadership of these communities need to want to help their constituents at least as much as I, a nobody from a blue liberal hellscape city, want to help their constituents

Sarah Taber had something about that recently - jobs that don't depend on the local landed gentry.

They also voted to have Dr. Siddiqi and Dr. Olowole deported. They are determined to die of preventable diseases and it would be churlish to stand in their way.

There are lots of rural hospitals in blue states -- indeed there are entire populations you probably are unaware of.

My state govt did exactly that.

And it’s all worth it to them if they know WE are even MORE miserable!

Rural rage is also just a fixed part of the political landscape. If they’re not hating Dems for the failure of their own policies they’ll just invent a narrative out of whole cloth to fill the void.

It’s because they hate their children and sacrifice them to the antichrist they worship.
