Translation is a very real point. Images containing text aren't easily translatable. Alt-text solves that.

A couple other reasons to use alt text that I haven't seen mentioned yet: 1) It's fun to write it! 2) It's a useful writing exercise. Learning to recognize the aspects of a visual image that are important in a particular context, then putting those into words will make your writing better.

Sometimes I'll post an image of text. It would be really useful if Bluesky had a tool to copy it to alt-text.

You can expand on your "brevity is the soul of wit" one-liner joke. You can wax poetic and/or share your verbal dexterity. You can discuss the other four physical senses besides vision: hearing, tasting, smelling, touching. You get to do this! And both you and your audience benefits.

Alt-text also allows you to place 1000 characters whereas the main text is a lot less.

YES!!! I made a video for my business account the other day about how incredibly beneficial it is to use alt text.

Some people can't do this. Bad eyesight, #longcovid brain. Also describing pictures is super subjective. It is not easy. Half blind, attacked on Mastodon by abled men for not using alt text, or saying it isn’t correct. It's a huge mess. Another reason to pick on women and the disabled.

Also if someone makes an obscure joke or the picture is a character I think is cool but don't recognize, I always appreciate alt text that gives context/explanations

I use alt-text as an added means of communication It's been super helpful getting my full thoughts out there, since normally miscommunication is a very common occurence and I use the alt-text to help clear things up a bit to avoid any potential misunderstandings.

There’s so many reasons! Like if a picture of text is wider than it is tall (i.e. I have to keep swiping left and right while zoomed in to read it) alt text puts it in a much better format where I only have to scroll one direction once.

It's a thing I say often, our disability aides can often be good for people who are not disabled, and in using them, it helps us in return. I am visually impaired/use screen reader and often rely on ALT text, so the more people use it, it's perfect - Thank you so much for the thoughtful poster 💖😸

This is why this setting is also super useful:

I was at first describing everything in detail and realized since I make comics I should just be putting the dialog in the comic into the alt text to make it screen reader and translation friendly.

I love the chicken/rabbit part!

You mean AI. You only care about alt text because it helps AI interpret my posts, so my posts can be used to train plagiarism machines. Until AI became a thing, the only people who talked about alt text were web developers, who were usually pulling their hair out trying to code for screen readers.

and creating an alt text from the picture wirh solely text is easy: copy and paste. find that very comfortable.

How do we feel about using AI to generate alt text for photographs? I feel like i never know what I should say.

When you say translation does that mean, the alt text could be written in a different language to the language used in an image? I can see the upside of that, but also the downside possibly making it less accessible to some. #a11y #accessibility

Why post an image ? Post the alt text directly !!!

I've no idea if this is a Firefox thing or a macOS thing, but I found out yesterday that if you copy text including pictures from a web page and paste into a text editor it pastes the alt text for the image, which is kinda nice...

I think the only alt text I regularly encounter / interact with is XKCD
