I don't think it's "snobby" to dislike a movie? And a little bizarre to imply an artist should have to praise anything that indirectly earned them money

Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey is the number 4 book on Amazon, and advertises itself as the inspiration for Christopher Nolan's film, which Emily Wilson is here taking a giant crap all over. I can't decide if this is gutsy beyond belief or the snobbiest thing anyone has ever done.

I find it strange, which I’m experiencing with my friend in a text message right now, that people can’t seem to express their disagreement with her take without resorting to personal attacks of snobbery, clout-chasing, or jealousy.

Writers disliking film adaptations is a time honored tradition. The Bonfire of the Vanities. The Shining. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Myra Breckenridge. Etc. The difference here is for a ‘mere translator’ to voice an opinion? Sadly, people don’t understand or appreciate what translators do.

Honestly I assume she wrote the review because she's making money off of it and would be uncomfortable doing so without making her opinion clear. That's not 'snobby' so much as principled.
