History was like skimming through because of the amount of information to be covered. I remember going back and focusing on the constutuonal convention and reconstruction. Both only got a chapter and deserved a semester

got access to a library for the first time when I was about 6-7, but it was limited; I read a lot faster than I could get books. No full access until I was in 7th grade, but then it was great--rode a bus to school--could browse & check out as many as I wanted until class started--heaven... :)

As a history teacher, I rarely use a textbook. Primary sources are my favorite means of instruction. I love having students analyze, contextualize, and critically think about the source material. I also love having students examine current scholarship. Textbooks are boring and often outdated.

Every history textbook is inherently a mile wide & an inch deep. They cover the “whats” but not the “whys”. They’re counterproductive to thinking & learning. They cost schools big $$$. But pablum is safe 🤷 That’s why the wackadoos are coming after the libraries- dangerous ideas reside there.

Reading and learning is great but I don't miss the days of needing questions answered and having to drive across town and spending 2hrs to find the answer....

My history teacher taught me some cold, hard facts in high school. One of them was that the US government massacred people at Wounded Knee and in Vietnam.

Even then the Fed's role in financing it should not be too large.Most of the funding should come from the community! The State should play a certain role, but not too heavy handed Libraries will do much better in times of little money than money will in times of few libraries!

I hope libraries are holding on to the older books. Some of the knowledge in those books is likely to be edited out of online 'knowledge' (and AI) for political reasons. As the use of online 'knowledge' grows, the ability for centralised control over 'the narrative' grows.

At the end of the day children should be, read Need to be, encouraged to hit their libraries and read even if it is just through some form of minor compensation to trigger that hunger. In 1991-92, I was diagnosed Bipolar. I had no clue what it was. I went to the library. I checked out every book, sometimes 2 a week, to learn about it. I knew I had to arm myself with all the knowledge I could to fight that beast. FF to 2026, live alone, stable, good credit, on meds since.

I don't know if it's a big thing outside of France, but here we have multimedia libraries (médiathèques). Basically a library, except it's not just books but also music, films, magazines, etc. I discovered many of my favourite film genres and bands in my teens thanks to them. They're awesome.

We so dearly need to reinvest in the education system and get the MAGA people out of it. Teachers deserve to at least be part of the middle class...

I volunteered in our school library for 3 years. Our Librarian had a PhD in literature ... even in the small 4A school of 450 K-12 from 3 small towns in the 1960's. My grad class was 42 kids. She let me take home however many books I wanted 🥰

Most states have boards that examine textbooks from different publishers before adopting those that reflect the views of the boards, not educators. Unfortunately, the Texas board is overly influential because of the numbers of textbooks ultimately bought. And Texas is overrun with wacko Xtians.

And my little local (shoutout to Hopkinton, NH!) village library had so many crafting books back in the 80s, it was my heaven. Right next to it was the antiquarian society, with a collection of town history that INCLUDED the native history.

And here's the thing about libraries... They have books and knowledge and so much more. They are a place to gather with ZERO expectation of spending money. They have Internet and research resources. My local library has fishing poles you can check out and seeds for free. They are MAGIC.

I picked up a local rural library when it closed and turned it into a book rental in all but name. I sold books at .75 and bought books at .50 as long as I didn't already have a copy of that book. Surprisingly, non-fiction books did more business than anything besides Louis L'Amour

I get the hate on data centers. But they are like power plants, everyone loves what they do but no one wants to live next to one. Much of technology, and the economy, are dependent on them. AI like Sora or ChatGPT are just a small fraction of what they do.

I lived a block from our library, an original Carnegie library. I almost lived in that building. I sucked in school growing up, today people compliment me on being well-read.

The other amazing thing about books, especially the older ones, is that they've not been re-written to be "politically correct" or to leave out uncomfortable bits...they're exactly as the author wrote them, original, true and a real taste of that world the author wanted to portray.

Crazy that I use to hooky grade school & go hide out at the huge main branch of the Phila. Free Library which was like a museum for a couple hours then head over a block to the Ben Franklin Museum of Science or the Rodin Museum of Art where I hid my school books behind it by the railroad trestle 👍🏻✌🏻😁
