A big part of it is lack of respect and visibility for classic PC gaming. Myst did get ported to every CD-ROM format under the sun, but it never seemed to be as respected on any platform where the mouse wasn't the primary input device.

I barely gamed on PC in the '90s, but it does not sit well with me at all that the most fondly and widely remembered iteration of SimCity is Nintendo's console-specific spin on it.

Huh? I guess we hang in different online circles.

I think you're over estimating. A tiny fraction of people who think about Sim City are thinking of SNES. It might have stood out on SNES, but its core audience where on micros and PCs. (It was primarily an Amiga and Mac release, then C64 and DOS.) I think more people think of Sim City 2000, anyway.

I've never been a PC gamer, always console, and I legit didn't know there was a Nintendo port until right now

I don't think that's true. I was 98% console and handheld games growing up, but SimCity 2000 is the SimCity i'm most familiar with. I didn't know the Nintendo one existed until Smash Bros. added Dr. Wright, and then I still thought he was a Zelda character at first

I maintain a genuine Windows 98 machine mostly for the sake of messing around in SimCopter. But I have met more than a few people who have basically said "I wouldn't be interested in a SimCity collection if it didn't have the SNES version," and that's another reason to belittle the Nintendo kids.
