Like, I am super critical of modern Mario games for this kind of Trinket Checklist Gameplay specifically. But I cannot deny that that is still design with intent.

I was looking for an old quote and found this year old artcile where a Kotaku writer feels so stupidly about Nintendo not having achievements. "ARE THEY TOO GOOD FOR ACHIEVEMENTS??" Yes Zack, they are. For all I can criticize about nintendo, they actually design their games.

I just randomly remembered Street Fighter 6's Alex incest subplot and cackled.

22. Super Mario Sunshine is a sentient game. For those it deems unworthy, it becomes a glitchy mess with annoying missions. But for those with pure souls, who honor Nintendo in their hearts, it's a blast.

The key to enjoying Sunshine is realizing that it's not actually a collectathon. The Shines don't do anything. The final level just unlocks once you beat each other level's 7th mission. Everything else is optional.

There's just a whole lot more anti-Arab racism in the party's upper brass than anyone is really comfortable admitting.

Honestly this kind of restraint with marketing is one of Nintendo's more admirable habits. For one, I tire of discourse that is more about speculation and hype than it is about the actual games. No need to feed that. Also, it's OoT; they don't have to do heavy lifting to sell it in the first place.

It's basically impossible to not know who ModRetro is if you're doing business with them or writing a story about them, which is why at this point my default assumption for any entity that chooses to work with them is that they're doing so BECAUSE of culture war bs to at least some degree.

Man I still remember the first reveal thread I read on that game and one reply that stuck out in particular: "Yeah yeah, I know, but guys... what if it's GOOD?"

Bizarrely enough I think most of that stuff made it into the Windows release.

Thinking about this again and reflecting on how Myst was the first big "hardcore vs casual" discourse magnet that I can remember, which I'm sure is a contributor to its lack of modern mindshare. The Riven strategy guide even opened with some rather defensive commentary about it.

I'm less charitable. Considering that a cursory look into it makes it clear that it's not up to snuff with Analogue's N64 (a product that itself falls short of Analogue's typical pedigree), my default position on this one is to assume that anybody boosting it is doing so *because* of culture war bs.

I bought this on release, thought it played fine enough for what it was, and then shelved it indefinitely once I realized there was no local multiplayer whatsoever.

It's one of the reason why I roll my eyes at any retrospective that tries to talk about something like Virtua Racing as a "franchise." There is more DNA shared between Model 1 Virtua Racing and F-Zero GX than there is between Model 1 Virtua Racing and Saturn Virtua Racing.

There are parallels here to how they traditionally handled their arcade racers. Hang On, Outrun, Power Drift, Virtua Racing, Daytona, etc. all have staff overlap and throughlines in style, but it's less a "franchise" and more just the same people with the same sensibilities iterating on a concept.
