Ngl as a resident of a heavily Republican jurisdiction whose fiscal structure is incredibly dependent on federal money this is the shit that really keeps me up at night. Because when it’s time for Democrats to deliver righteous vengeance I know what a very tempting decision would be.

Again, as with monetizing the presidency in plain sight, this stuff is the most elemental Are We A Federal Union Or Not? thing that should immediately end a presidency. Reverse nullification. A constitutional order that cannot punish this is not worth saving. We need massive institutional reforms.

Illinois electing a Republican Governor was normal back then. The bigger point was that they got control of the state House for the only time since 1982 (it WAS a Republican drawn map because they won the coin toss due to a split between GA and Gov, but that’s the only time they won the House).
