Lawyers estimate that 70% of us have committed a Federal felony, so there would need to be a more careful standard.

first use the current executive powers to steer the boat avoiding the corrupt scotus and the political games in the congress to do the job halfway.

“Build back better” takes on a whole new meaning.

The Founders gave the power of the purse to Congress in order to check the Executive. That sets the precident the Treasury should be under the Legislative, not the Executive, ensuring the Executive cannot deviate from Congress's budget because the Legislature directly controls the check writing.

1. Overturn Citizens United. No PAC can give more than an individual and only to a candidate. 2. No lobbying permitted. 3. Term limits: 2 terms for senate, 4 for the house; 16 years for SCOTUS. Retroactive for all. 4. Impeachment jury: panel of 27 federal appellate judges. Majority decision.

Looks great. #4 would make me a little nervous.

Maybe, but it would be less political...

When a party wants power they refuse to abide by the rules! Then the people who belong to that party abet them!

Well-reasoned but unrealistic. New presidential powers do not go back in the bottle. Congress could focus: 1. Overturn Citizens United, 2. Kill the Electoral College (amendment) 3. End jerrymandering. All have major partisan downsides and might be a tough sell to a functionally illiterate public.

Will SCOTUS allow it?

There will be no post authoritarian government. The Supreme Court has given the executive branch carte blanche authority no matter the party. Authoritarian governance is the future so choose your leader wisely.

The president is subject to oversight. If Congress doesn't use its authority, we end up in the situation we're in. Stripping executive power is a great idea though.

First should be reforming the Supreme Court, limiting the types of cases it can hear and adding 18 more justices to serve on randomly assigned sets of 9 for each case. Without that, nothing will be possible.

Or just have Congress do its fucking job.

Start with impeaching John Roberts for his anti-democratic contributions in remaking the powers of the Presidency. All of this is useless unless he is removed.

Ответ для HrhRaizen

Yes, Roberts needs to go but reforming the court with a code of conduct, accountability measures and term limits should- if they are effective, remove all the Pro-Trump Justices based on the corruption and undermining of Democracy alone.

Congress could be doing exactly that now, but they won’t. They abdicated all power to Trump just about as soon as he was sworn in.

How do we do this without Constitutional Amendment now that the Supreme Court has ratified Supreme Leader authoritarianism as what the founders wanted in writing the Constitution?

We have to get there first. It's not going to be easy.

Structural reform won’t happen with milktoast centrists and former republicans who don’t really understand how we got here, and think Liz F’n Cheney would be part of a solution…you guys will bring us back to this very same situation, only you’ll do it more slowly. Get help.

Democrats must select a president and congressional and senate leaders who pledge to do this

And, public flogging. Lots of public flogging - televised.

And also, perp-walk the six MAGA Nazis on the US Supreme Court.

Unless the SC is expanded and reformed first they will just continue to corrupt the system. We can’t move forward with a corrupt court.

So those laws can be disregarded by a future authoritarian regime like this one is doing?

Right. What is the probability this will happen as long as the Republican party are cowards and will do ANYTHING for power?

The search needs to begin now for a good surgeon that can remove dem leadership’s heads from their assess.

not before retribution is complete

There's plenty of opportunity now to impose "real consequences for abuse." The problems don't go away by shuffling the structure. The first step has to be winning Senate and House elections, provided the GOP doesn't do away with them.

and change the high court! also, easier impeachment of congresspersons not doing their jobs

Nuremberg trials.

Same thing for the Supreme Court.

I would add that citizens need to be very, very careful who they vote for as President. Voting for an unserious candidate as a protest or to “send them a message” is juvenile and irresponsible.

All of these proposals and not a word about the Supreme Court? Until we have a Supreme Court that recognizes that Congress and the President can together limit executive power, we will continue with the current distorted view of the Constitution.

We have a system with three branches of government. This proposes vital reforms for the presidency. We also desperately need major reforms for the Supreme Court, which has gone rogue. In addition, we need to limit the role of money expanded by Citizens United. A lot to do as soon as we can.

Excellent article 🙏

Third, fully restore separation of the 3 branches of government to at least the pre-Trump regime era, and fortify and secure the legislative, and judicial branches to protect them from future executive branch manipulation, interference, and overreach. Forth, protect civil servants from the POTUS.

After Republicans make their changes you should make it harder on yourselves to reverse those policies -Bulwark

It’s basically what you have to do in any ‘After-Trump’ - move away from the source of the smell, open all the doors and windows, and let the fresh air in.

Will need to do some scrubbing because the Trump is ground in.

He now has the eyes of a reptilian animal with venom. His plastic surgeon did a very poor job.

Only problem is that GOP is pro authoritarian party. They won't comply with any restrictions.

There also needs to be a faster remedy than waiting for the next election when Congress doesn't do its job.

States must take more responsibility & accountability for elections. Irregularities are being ignored. No one is above the law & no one should be able to buy or threaten their way out of incarceration. That has to stop too. Tax the rich and balance the budget.

The obvious irony is republicans have created the authority to make the necessary changes but it only works if anti-fascist politicians elected to office are willing to take advantage of the fresh levers. And weather the inevitable accusations, accurate or otherwise, of hypocrisy.

CITIZENS UNITED, EXECUTIVE IMMUNITY, AND THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE. ALL AT ONCE!

$$$ is not speech, the President is not a King, we the people get to decide who is president! I agree. The equal rights, people not corporations, voting as a right and Supreme Court reform Amendment. Freequality amendment

👀

Agree, but include doing away with Citizens United! This will make it less lucrative for greedy and cheating politicians to run for office and rob the citizens blind.

The list of laws needed to be removed, changed or created is a million miles long. The changes must be swift and consequential. And it’s also going to take years.

Disband the #GOP

We better have a day one plan ready in case we still exist.

Great, now list The changes needed for the other two branches.

Oh no. Weren’t you the same people who promoted the the unitary executive theory?

Prevent lobbyists from corrupting the system. There’s so much to fix; does the will to do so exist? Break up monopolies too.

This cannot happen with @schumer.senate.gov as leader. He does not have it in him.

"Democrats will face a defining choice: exploit the executive machinery he has exposed, or dismantle it. The temptation to exploit it will be enormous—and yielding to that temptation would be a historic mistake"

First thing we do when we get power back - weaken our power. God help us

Term limits for Supreme Court justices

Both require expanding the court. The check on executive power IS congress. So maybe we do need an amendment outlining a process to recall senators and house members.

A must, no ands, ifs or butts... only a must.

Scrubbing the stain of republicanism is going to take some powerful cleaners.

Fine - after the next Democrat Prez serve two terms and rolls back all Trumpist actions.

The fatal flaw in those proposals is that a SCOTUS supermajority will nullify any efforts to limit their perverse view of Executive Branch. power.

Amen!!!

You would think that would have been addressed!

Constitutional Convention!

Only proportional representation at all levels with any group over 20 percent represented and full oversight of all executive branches of goverment by elected bodies.

Supreme court term limits

And require everyone to vote, like Australia does. We Americans are easily distracted by social media, reality shows, & shiny objects, & we forgot that not participating in an election just means that the wealthiest oligarch gets their own hand-picked, crooked politician put into office.

In the 2024 election, 78 million voted for pedo hitler, 77 million voted for Harris/Walz; & 90 million American voters sat home If only a fraction of the 90 million had voted, shithead would have lost; Maga always was a minority. The majority of us know he is at the very least, an incompetent moron.

The dumbass squatting in the White House is at a 30% approval rating; and that is predicted to sink further into the 20's. What exactly do these Trillionaire White Nationalist Oligarchs think is going to happen, when one day soon 80 Percent of the USA hates the pedo?

I think that many Federal agencies should be run by Congress and should be independent of the Presidency. Also, the House should be elected proportionally. Also, the Supreme Court should be term limited at 20 years, with ex-Justices becoming senior Federal judges.

Any hope of reforms rest on free and fair midterm elections

Everyone of these MF’s need to be prosecuted and sent to prison. Then reform the whole GD system

These recommendations would have saved us from what's happening today with a malignant narcissist wrecking ball. It would have kept us out of recurring wars by past Presidents, because of their unbridled power, not restrained by the War Powers Act. One person shouldn't be making these decisions.

Start here.

Third: elect a congress/senate with a spine

Before ANY of this can be done there will need to be an amendment curbing money “as speech” and designating that corporations (including non-profits) are not people
