Income - Taxes - Expenditures - Savings = 0 someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying

it always makes me laugh when they have a budget that includes EVERYTHING - vacations, entertainment, retirement, savings - and then they're like "there's no money left!!!" yes that's correct. you allocated the money to all your needs and wants. that's how it works, asshole

I don’t think there’s a way to budget such that post-tax income minus savings minus expenditures isn’t zero…

accidentally dropping large bags of cash off your balcony.

Maybe they like starting fires with their leftover cash?

He can only light one cigar per month and his buddies make fun of him doing it with only a $1 bill. ☹️

It's actually $12, that's why he makes the big bucks

This is, after all, a financial samurai

Speaking from experience, if I take my paycheck and immediately subtract the amount of my paycheck from it, the remainder is an extremely low number

$1500 for the gremlins that live under my bed, technically not an expenditure

There are so many absurdly expensive and ridiculous line items you can reduce or cut entirely. Anyone who complains they are spending $90k on private school needs to be reminded that public education exists and works great in most functioning countries.

Right, but then those cuts become savings, like the 529 and the 401k. The budget includes savings.

You could literally do that with any amount of money and make the same ridiculous complaint that after you budget all of your money, then there’s nothing left.

They’re like “where is the magic leftover money?!?!?!”

Yeah they're saving $46K a year here, I don't see the problem. $90K in private school tuition is fuckin' wild. If you're paying that kind of mortgage then the public schools are probably really good.

i refuse to hear complaints from people who are saving more than my annual income.

Also, $3k/mo for food for four is… a lot? We have five and $1500/mo is more than normal

What you’re showing isn’t so much a “budget” as it is a “list of things that happened.”

Their food budget alone for a family of four is half of what our take home pay is, to cover everything, for a family of three.

Yeah like what else would we be spending this mysterious money on?? Also I love how ideologically devoted this genre is to the status quo that it drastically undervalues health care costs. I used to pay $25k per year on premiums alone and that was when we were only 3 people ...

It's a fair(ish) point that non of their savings are liquid, so any emergency expenses might be hard to cover, but that's not the actual problem. They are spending nearly a quarter of their income on private schools. That's not sustainable.

I especially love how there’s a line item for vacation then another line for entertainment (vacations)

saving 20% and complaining you can't get by lmao

Once I account for all my money I have no money unaccounted for. I'm so poor!

“How do I change my budget so this doesn’t happen?!?”

Yeah at that point it's an accounting identity
