This portrayal of cyclists as some kind of woke menace to the common sense motorist will result in someone getting killed because a driver doesn't see why they should show even the minimum of consideration. The situation is bad enough as it is. I'm not even a cyclist and I can see that.

Comments have gone from "they're annoying" to "they deserved it". Jfc.

The list of targets seems to widen all the time. There's no end to the hatred.

The term Jay Walking was coined by the automotive industry in response to the giant spike in pedestrian deaths from cars. At the time a "Jay" was a term for a stupid ignorant person from a rural area, the implication was it was the pedestrian's fault for getting run down, for walking in the street.

Ответ для Caribou

And before cars, walking in the street was the normal thing to do! That was what streets were for. Then cars came along, and car drivers wanted all that space to themselves. Now they have got that, and are sore because there are OTHER car drivers out there! And they want someone to suffer for it.

Ответ для SuperMarina

So we had these things called horse drawn carries. You did not walk in the street if you could avoid it as they were literally covered in shit.

Ответ для tension352

Well, obviously it varied a bit where exactly people walked. But horses and carriages were expensive. Most people didn’t own any. So some streets were not so shitty. And people walked in them. If the streets were full of horseshit there were also horses and carriages to avoid!

Ответ для SuperMarina

Larger cities, like New York, had to have people whose job was to clear the generous amount of horse shit deposited on their streets.

As someone who recently had to remind a driver neighbor that cyclists have the right of way, despite his opinion that cars ought to "become they're bigger," I appreciate that you see this🩷

consistency is not the strong point for many of these people but it's funny the way that ‘things were better in the good old days’ can sit alongside ‘cycling is elitist’ and, most likely, having four grandparents who never drove a car

It already has many time, btw.

Cyclists will start living longer when they realize they also have to obey traffic signals and the rules of the road. They dnt because they feel they are special and then cry when they get run over after failing to obey signals or common sense traffic laws.

Get up the yard son.

Ответ для sawgod44

There's no such thing as a cyclist or a motorist. Just people using different modes of transport. Often the same people. It's the individual who causes accidents, not the vehicle.

Ответ для Zoe Adorned

However you wish to look at it. people whom choose to use bikes as a mode of transport, will live longer if they realize the rules of the road apply to them as well. Better chief?

Ответ для sawgod44

*Road users* will live longer. I see numerous people driving cars through red lights. The stereotype is the damaging thing.

Ответ для Zoe Adorned

lol where do you live that numerous people in cars run through red lights? Sounds made up, you dnt have police or red light cameras in Waldo World?

Ответ для sawgod44

On my drive home every car was going 60 in a 50 zone, I saw multiple cars blow through cross walks, I doubt there is a single person who followed the road rules perfectly. But yeah, it is the bikers who keep killing people right?

There are a lot of cyclists that seem to dare a car driver to hit them. Stay in your lane is a thing. Share the road is a thing, obey the traffic laws. Wear bright colors and a helmet. Hell, get a flag. Cars I why I don't ride a bike anymore.

There are two kinds of people 1) those with empathy for vulnerable people and 2) psychopaths.

Ответ для Lulucaliente

BTW go Niners. My daughter's favourite team in any sport.

An average (not likely overweight) rider w bicycle is maybe 180 lbs (75 kg). An average Ef U Giant Truck is 6000 lbs (3 T) plus it contains an obese angry loser with dick issues and a bed that is shiny new. Cars & bicycles lumped together on roads as equal is A HATEFUL INEQUITY CAUSING DEATHS!

As a motorist I give cyclists the same consideration that they give me when I'm a pedestrian.

Ответ для Steve

I was a cyclist for decades I had to stop because of health issues. cyclists need to do their part too. Like obey stop signs/red lights, don’t make every ride a Tour de France race, don’t assume that drivers see you. I saw this bad behavior all the time and thought this is why drivers hate cyclists

Ответ для bill73-53

By the same token, drivers are all on their phones, not respecting a red light unless it's been red for 5 seconds, not respecting passing distances to cyclists, not respecting bike lanes, left hooking cyclists, etc etc etc. Tell me which is more dangerous again.

Ответ для Old Man Yao Guai

Cyclists aren't perfect but they can't turn other beings to paste in the blink of a distracted eye

Ответ для bill73-53

98% of bike/car collisions are the fault of the driver. Every cyclist could follow every law every second of the day and it wouldn’t make the tiniest dent in road safety stats

Ответ для Rich

A more accurate description would be th majority are the fault of the driver. I think a big mistake of cyclists is assuming the driver sees them. I see a number of cyclists who do nothing in regards to being visible, including not using day glow colors, reflectors or lights.

Ответ для bill73-53

I wasn’t making up the figure; it’s the result of the a study carried out by West Midlands Traffic police. www.theguardian.com/environment/... Hi-viz does nothing to reduce the risk of collisions with motor vehicles and in fact might increase it. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Undercover bike cops launch 'best ever' cycle safety scheme in BirminghamCampaigners hope the operation, that sees plain clothes police on bikes pull over drivers that pass too close, will be taken up across the countrywww.theguardian.com
Ответ для Rich

I personally I would advise riders to use high visibility High-vis clothing, reflectors, and bike lights improve cyclist visibility. Fluorescent colors help by day; reflective gear helps at night. Sources: Cochrane Review (2006); Kwan & Mapstone, Accident Analysis & Prevention.

Ответ для bill73-53

Whilst the review showed greater awareness, it didn’t show an opinion on whether that led to reduced risk of collision. “We found no trials assessing the effect of visibility aids on the occurrence of pedestrian and cyclist‐motor vehicle collisions and injuries.”… 1/2

Ответ для Rich

“However, the effect of visibility aids on pedestrian and cyclist safety remains unknown.” 2/2

Ответ для Rich

Well, I guess it's ride at your own risk then and what makes you feel safe. Go to your city's board meetings and state your concerns, ask for more police presence on your routes. I rode for decades, in all sorts of traffic, weather, night and day. although I'm healthy enough to ride again, 1/2

Ответ для Rich

Distracted drivers remain my greatest concern I also rode motocycles for years, 10s of thousands of miles. One thing that kept me alive was riding as if I was invisable, I never once assumed a drive saw me. I see cyclist that go out of their way to challenge drivers to prove a point, stupid beheivor

Ответ для bill73-53

Ah yes Cochrane, the paper that very clearly stated that *they could find no evidence that increased detection by drivers led to reduction in crashes*. What great support for your argument that Really, Cyclists Should Wear Hi Viz More cyclingfallacies.org/en/19/people...

Then it’s ride at your own risk and do what makes you feel safe and secure. If riding at night with no lights or reflectors is your thing, go for it. If challenging drivers to right of way makes you feel powerful, do it.

Ответ для bill73-53

Lights are a legal requirement. I was just highlighting that hi-vis might be increasing the risk of a driver driving into you. The study that you linked to confirmed they couldn’t say that it reduces collisions. The one I linked said it definitely doesn’t and might increase the risk.

Ответ для Rich

Your highlight received, and no argument. hey I’m just a faceless person on BlueSky trying to entertain myself. I hope my comments are as meaningless and non influential on you as yours are to me. Be happy have fun and be safe

I had to change my route to avoid any one-lane stretches but I still have trouble at cross walks. Thing is, it is illegal to ride an electric bike on a sidewalk, but if you want to live, you almost have to.

Try riding a Harley in traffic. Cagers are out to kill us. Soundproof cars, on the phone, listening to the radio. Be careful out there, thay don't care.

Ответ для CDXX420

...and a Harley is a big, loud, very obvious motorbike. You'd think people would notice a Harley.

Ответ для GeorgeWeeks2014

I read somewhere that was part of the engineering - the mufflers were loud on purpose so drivers would notice. Is that true?

Ответ для Aldea Brennan Plum

No idea. But the throaty throbbing sound of a large 45° V-twin is a big part of why people like riding Harley-Davidsons.

Ответ для GeorgeWeeks2014

I once read a story about a US-funded rural vaccination progamme in Africa distributing medicine by motorbike. It was a great idea...except it was tied aid; all the kit had to be American. The aid workers thus had to buy three Harley-Davidsons & roar across the Savannah. Quite cool, but ridiculous.

Hon we don't even think about it. There are so few bicycles moving thru traffic that there's a biased blindness to it. My dad was hit by a truck in a bike lane & it broke his neck. Quadriplegia became his new normal & eventually took his life.

I cycle for transport because it's convenient, free and healthy. It's not a "statement of sanctimony" - it's just a good way to get around. The only real impediment to cycling Nirvana comes from ferocious drivers, generally in Teslas, Audis and Ford Ranger Raptors.

Never have understood why cyclists upset shitass people. Not creating traffic jams, not polluting the air, staying fit to keep health costs low & enjoying our planet.

It already happens. People on bikes are seen as less than human. I would bet that almost everybody who has ridden even fairly regularly will have had an experience at the hands of a driver that’s left them shaking

Ответ для Rich

This has been happening for a long time. People who are unhappy will try to take out their unhappiness on someone else, and they usually pick someone 'different'. I've seen people miss their exit or near roll their huge SUVs because they did something stupid to try endanger/intimidate cyclists.

Ответ для Rich

Various studies conclude this and it helps explain why helmets/hi-viz actually reduces safety, because the appearance and attire helps dehumanise. Also, the dehumanising language used by vehement anti-cyclists online (using terms like cockroaches or road lice) reinforces this.

Ответ для Rich

Why I stopped road riding.

Ответ для Rich

Monthly…

Agreed. But it cuts both ways, too - portraying drivers who make occasional mistakes as malicious or incompetent causes bicyclists to treat *all* drivers as such.

Ответ для TekNeex

that is how we keep from dying. that is why women choose the bear.

Ответ для Margaret Yovan

“A dog shit in my yard so all dogs are bad” is childish behavior.

Ответ для TekNeex

expecting cyclists to trust drivers until they get hurt is foolish advice.

Ответ для Margaret Yovan

That sure makes cycling seem like an inherently risky activity. If only there were alternative ways to get exercise or travel, that come with less inherent risk 🤷‍♂️

Ответ для TekNeex

So we’re supposed to stop biking because drivers are assholes? Why are drivers so triggered by cyclists? Do they treat motorcyclists the same way?

Ответ для momo941

You’re riding bicycles amongst large metal cages traveling at high speeds driven by distracted drivers, and complaining about the risk involved. Bike or motorcycle all you want, just recognize that it’s an optional choice with viable safer alternatives and take responsibility for your own actions.

Ответ для TekNeex

i am taking responsibility . i do not trust motorists when i am cycling. not sure why that is not a reasonable approach in your eyes, and not sure i care anymore.

Ответ для Margaret Yovan

You’re responding to something that wasn’t even said to you. If y’all are going to gang up on people for expressing their opinions, at least realize that every single thing they say won’t be directed at you. Anyways, drivers don’t even trust other drivers - so why should you? Makes sense to me 👍

Ответ для TekNeex

So people either have to put themselves in danger or spend on average $10k a year on a vehicle just to get around? And we should all just accept this like there is no other option?

Ответ для dirtsoup

I’m not saying it’s the way that it *should* be. I’m saying that it’s the way that it is. Roads certainly aren’t as wide as they are to accommodate bicycles, and there are certainly more drivers than bicyclists…

Ответ для TekNeex

so don’t blame the drivers for your “safety risks” because your own situation/choices put you at risk. Being on roads in *any* capacity is inherently unsafe, we all know this. Fight for safety measures, sure. But the drivers aren’t the ones not giving them to you, that’s the politicians.

Ответ для TekNeex

Where I live about 2% of the city commutes by bike and about 30% that cannot drive, but could bike if it was safe. About 0.7% of the roadways have bike infrastructure. The city council is very pro bike, yet many drivers still think we have "too many bike lanes" and fight to remove them.

Ответ для TekNeex

Easy way to fix that is ban cars. Bikes were there first anyway.

I'm super careful when overtaking cyclists, I'm careful around motorcyclists too - neither have a big metal box around them to protect them from harm

Ответ для sjhutton99

Sadly the accountability for people who kill cyclists is null. One girl didn’t stop on a freeway - drove about 50 yd uphill through a metal fence & killed a cyclist in a separated bike path. She got a slap on the wrist. Ppl felt bad because she was “young”. I was revolted.

Just general fascism to hate on EVERYONE!

This is what my feed order showed:

Cyclists are heroes, doing their part to avoid carbon emission. We should treat them as such.

My best friend died after being hit by a car while riding his bike. I'm more than a little biased on this topic.

It's getting worse and social media is actively contributing. Local media via socials especially. A staggering amount of people complain about the impact on cars & traffic from safe cycling infrastructure without seemingly once stopping to ask why we need the infra in the first place.

Ответ для Eoin Buckley

It's becoming a very noticeable thing. I got a taxi at the weekend and the presence of one solitary cyclist on the road prompted the kind of diatribe from the driver you'd expect from an Irish National Party member talking about immigrants. There's some dangerous rhetoric about.

I see what you're writing, but a cyclist once made me touch the brake pedal so they all deserve to die under my wheels.

Drivers speed everywhere, fail to yield, to signal, to stop, and fail nearly every other rule of the road if it suits them, all while suction cupping their phones to their windshields… and then they get precious about the “rules of the road” when they see a bike run a stop sign at half their speed.

They can’t show consideration for pedestrians or other drivers. Just because one can turn right on red doesn’t mean they should

Ответ для steeney

There’s a lot of focus on speed which is an issue and deserves the attention but not enough on failure to yield.

My son was an avid bike rider for years. His riding buddy was killed the one time my son didn't go riding with him. My son hasn't ridden his bike since this happened.

Provincial government in Alberta is promoting this dysfunctional perspective on bike riders and bike lanes. Many may not remember back in the day the city of Edmonton was embarrassed they were using sheep to eat the grass in the river valley, same situation humans riding bikes is so 3rd world.

I drive, I cycle. I never trust drivers to behave themselves.

Ответ для Victoria, nasty 🇨🇦

I drive, I walk. Same 100%

Ответ для Aldea Brennan Plum

I walked along the same quiet country road for years. Sometimes with my dog, sometimes not. The amount of glares from motorists who might perhaps lose half a second because someone was on the road was amazing. On one occasion a guy pulled up and shouted, "Get off the road sir." Entitlement gone mad.

Ответ для Eamonn Sweeney

I didn’t have a car for 10 years out in the country 8 miles to the closest bus stop, which was in the closest town I didn’t have any close encounters with vehicles luckily. For me it was weirdos in the woods

Already has.

Already has. The angry "common sense" motorist brigade have had numerous road safety schemes watered down, delayed, cancelled, people have died *as a direct result*. Blood on their hands, the lot of 'em, but they don't care, it's an acceptable cost of doing business as long as it's not their own.

It's baffling to me why sharing the road is a concept so difficult to grasp. Drive defensively. Look out for the other guy.

I always give cyclists, joggers and Amish buggies a wide berth when I am passing them………maybe I’m just weird that way🤔

Ответ для jseib3

That, and a big slowdown!

A GP (doctor) was killed on a training ride in NZ. The vehicle had swerved into his riding buddy, the repeated when it came to the victim. This time it hit the cyclist. No one was ever held accountable.

The culture war between motorists & cyclists everywhere is interesting. Before the 1960s, cycling was common in Europe. Since then however, the average motorist is no longer a cyclist or an ex-cyclist - and there's your problem right there - so many motorists believe that cycling is 'a new thing'.

Ответ для Pintswiththelads

“Culture war”? “Between motorists and cyclists”? People don’t die in “culture wars”, only one side is being injured/killed, etc.

Ответ для B

Oh it's a culture war alright and as a cyclist I have the scars to prove it. Simply because something is a culture war doesn't mean it can't hurt or kill. Ask anyone who has been gay for the past 50 years.

Ответ для Pintswiththelads

The disparity in the power of the weaponry available to the two sides perhaps makes it a bit more like an onslaught by an army on a civilian population.

I see the utter distain, aggression and inhuman treatment people afford each other on the road every day. Cyclists are the minority road user and yet incur people’s wrath at wildly disproportionate rates. Why?

This goes further than just cars vs bikes. People using their cars to intimidate and harm people is epidemic. I’ve experienced it on a bike, walking on a sidewalk, and standing at a protest. We need to figure out how to stop these dangerous people.

I don't ride my bike on the streets of S Florida. They would just as soon hit you and leave you for dead. Sad, but only bike trails for me.

In my area at least, cyclists blithely take it for granted that motorists will watch out for them. Ride your bike down the sidewalk, then walk your bike in the crosswalk, don’t use hand signals, wear black at night, don’t follow the rules of the road because you’re a cyclist by god. Ad nauseam.

Ответ для GFarquart

Now talk about the drivers speeding, ignoring lights, looking at their phones, not indicating and ignoring the rules of the road in general because you're a motorist by god. Ad nauseum. And then guess which one is more likely to kill someone.

Drivers have been outright homicidal for decades. They're becoming unhinged vehicular terrorists these days.

I am a cyclist and a driver. I know how the odds are stacked against me when not in that metal box. Much as drivers can be angry and dangerous I am also furious with cyclists who act like pricks - because when the driver decides to pay it forward I might be the poor sod who gets the fallout.
