Look up inclined planes. Very common for moving materials and workers in quarries and mines, there were/are a few which carried large water tanks to transport boats between levels on a canal.

Honestly, given how much time they spend on that elevator over the course of the series, I’m shocked nobody ever had sex on it. Though a lot of people do get penetrated on it.

My immediate thought was “Resident Evil 2”

This post prompted me to look up the Royal Gorge incline railway, which was the steepest incline railway in the world, but now I have learned it was destroyed by wildfire last year. I remember going on it as a kid. Even in summer, the river and wind at the bottom were so cold.
