☢️#193. Shaun of the Dead, 2004. Somehow pulling off the impossible task of lampooning the #zombie genre while still embracing it with total earnestness. A gem of a film that gets a repeat viewing practically every time it crosses my mind. It’s a sickness really. 5/5 ☢️

The movie also introduced me to what became my favorite song, Queen's Don't Stop Me Now. The scene of the heroes beating the zombie with pool queues to the beat of that song, hilarious! youtu.be/W4tVH7BPb-Q?...

I don’t have a perfect recall, but im fairly sure it’s gotten used a bunch in tv / film post SOTD. Either subconsciously or as a nod. Either way, Queen is pleased I’m sure

Ответ для Fantasy & Apocalyptic films reviewed

Oh. I am sure. These are the two that always come to mind when I hear that song. There are something like ten Queen songs used in Good Omens.

Absolute favorite Zombie flick.

Dogs can’t look up

such a good flick!

T

a most excellent flim...

Agree a timeless gem I've watched many times and enjoyed each.

The only zombie movie I’ve ever enjoyed!! Lost count how many times I’ve seen it.

This is one of my favorite movies! In fact, there is a zombie mini game I used to play - it’s an event in a larger game platform and I would change my name to “the Winchester” 😅 🍺

Truly a classic Zombie film. Brilliant.

Love the Ending!

Zombie chaos everywhere! But he's still calling his weed dealer in the middle of it...

I mean, yes.

Great film

Perfect

One of my favorites. Absolutely ridiculous while still giving the old zombie genre a respectful nod.

It is an awesome movie

I avoid this film at first, thought it would be a piss-take too much, as I LOVE a zombie movie. Was I wrong, it’s such a loving satire, so funny, so on point, written by zombie movie fans for sure.

Pub?

couldn't agree more - my favorite of the so-called "cornetto trilogy" and honestly? one of my favorite films ever.

Ответ для Richard Brecky presents: JELLYBEAN!

Hot Fuzz gets more plaudits but SotD is the better film. If only to see Penelope Wilton from Ever Decreasing Circles turn into a zombie.

the stone roses

I fuckin' LUV this bloody film !!!!!!!!!

❤️❤️❤️❤️ One of my all time favs!

My favorite Cornetto Trilogy film, BY FAR. It goes from almost slapstick to deeply emotional on a dime. That shot of Shaun and Ed touching heads saying good by near the end hits me in the feels every time. As does the scene in the car with Shaun’s step dad. You know the one… 5/5 for me too.

Child locks - you can never be too safe

Ответ для Rick Bullard

Why someone hasn’t done a timesplitters/shaun of the dead crossover video game I have no idea.

It’s brilliant, even for someone not well versed in the zombie filmscape. So is Hot Fuzz.

Sidebar: Looking to kill time before a movie - a bar bouncer at a place wasn’t going to let us in because there was a cover for stage performance of “point break” going on. We explained that we were only there for a drink and he let us sneak in. Only time I’ve worn a poncho while drinking a pint.

I had held off for so long to watch this movie. Then several years ago, it fell right into a movie challenge category. Now in the huge group of people who love it. It deserves all the cred it gets and more. 🧟

Haha, I thought you were going somewhere else (I come across contrarian folks pretty often in the genre fan world). Glad you’re a fan

One of my all time favorites too!

LOVE THIS MOVIE!!

Just watched again timeless

It's superb. 😻

The zombie genre is not my usual cup of tea, but I absolutely loved this movie and rewatch it frequently. Always seem to notice a previously missed sight gag.

Same here. I think about it and then have to watch it. Such well made, well written and beautifully acted flick. A contemporary classic! Well… gonna go watch it now…

Can you tell I'm a fan

I've always called this and Hot Fuzz the perfect 'don't know what genre mood I'm in' movies because they simultaneously take their genre seriously while being inherently unserious films.

I’m addicted to Hot Fuzz!!!!

💯 Cannot praise this film more highly. Bill Nighy’s performance is a gem.

Agreed 👍

S

🤣 me too. I discovered that I know every damn word !!! But I love it. Oh and Night of the Comet, 1984

George Romero loved that film.

Great movie!

I love Simon’s mother’s “It’s been a funny sort of day” comment as she’s slowly dying in a zombie apocalypse. Perfect encapsulation of British understatement.

Already loved Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen. Didn’t know it was possible to love it even harder, yet here we are

A law should be passed to never allow the song to be used anywhere else.

And Hit Fuzz is even better. Best cop buddy movie ever made

Love all the movies those two guys did together

Sadly Nick Frost is a shit stain so I can't watch this anymore. Pretty tired of men.

Harry Potter is enough

Ответ для Andi

Agreed! I just wondered if there was something I missed.

It's posted nearly on Nick Frost (who played Ed) 's birthday. Surprising enough.

I should watch this and see how it stacks up with Zombieland. Watching Woody Harrelson hack zombies to bits, as he searches for the last Twinkie on earth, is hilarious. Nut up or shut up.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

It’s ten times better than Zombieland. Maybe more.

Ответ для Brian

But the Twinkie issue... Will catch up today.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

They're both really great! But there's something special about Shaun of the Dead. I hope you enjoy it! My favorite scene includes a Queen song. It's a real delight! 😊

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)

I have not seen it, when it came out I was with a person who was not gifted with a sense of humor at birth.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

That's so unfortunate, but I'm glad you're not in that toxic situation anymore. I hope you've healed from it. 😊

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)

Definitely. Took a while empowering many people in abusive relationships, for me to realize that was what I was in. So I moved on.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

That's admirable - way too many people never find their way out of a relationship like that. I'm happy you were there for others, and that it gave you the awareness and strength you needed to leave yours! Hell yeah!

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)

She dented my pinto, man. I was so upset, I picked a fight with her that I lost, like I always did.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

This is you and her? I'm not familiar with what a pinto is, but deductive reasoning tells me it's that thing on your head. Sounds like it's a huge relief for you that you're free from that.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

To give the student's body the feel for how hard she should knee kick my groin, I would often drop my pelvis into as it came in. Some students, by the end of the 20 hour class, would kick me so hard it would lift me completely off the ground. Thank whoever for my groin protector.

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)

I saw Queen twice in concert when I was in high school. I have been to lots of concerts, but nobody has ever owned the audience like Freddy Mercury. Mike Meyers almost refused to make Wayne's World, when Lorne Michaels wanted him to play something apart from Bohemian Rhapsody.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

I'm so jealous! I'm sure those are cherished memories! He died when I was a kid, so I was never so lucky and didn't grow to appreciate Queen until I was about 12. He was such a phenomenal performer, there will never be another quite like him!

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)
Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

I LOVE this video! My mom had a copy of part of this concert on a VHS - I have no idea where/when she recorded it, but it wasn't commercial. Anyway, she put it on one day while she was cooking dinner, and it took almost 3 weeks for my little brother to say anything other than "Day-O" after that! 😂

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

Also I had no idea about that tidbit about Wayne's World! Meyers is a real one, good for him for sticking to it. That is a classic, iconic scene! Thanks for sharing that!

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)

Lorne Michaels, who produced it, suggested a more modern act, like Guns 'n' Roses. Meyers refused, and that song so belonged in the movie.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

Guns 'n' Roses?! No, Lorne - that would not work! They're fine, but not right for that scene, nor those characters! I can't even imagine that scene without Bohemian Rhapsody!

Ответ для AJ Nyx (she/her)

Lorne told Jerry Seinfeld that one thing he learned doing Saturday Night Live was, "You never know what comedians are doing, you just need to get out of their way, and trust they will have the material ready to air." I suspect Wayne's World may be where he learned that.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

With Meyers and Carvey in the mix, I bet you're right! They are both loose cannons, comedically speaking.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

Not quite the same (but both are good). I suppose the US equivalent would have been the cast of Friends barricaded in the coffee shop…

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

I dig zombieland as well but I have a decisive victor in my heart

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

Zombieland was great as well. Woody Harries was brilliant. Pretty good cast I hope they do make a third one and end it there.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

Watched it last night, funny as hell, but I still like Zombieland, not the ending, so much, but Woody Harrelson rocked the house.

Ответ для Mugger Jack, (Lucky)

Like me some woody for sure. No country is one of my wh faves I just watched.

Love this one! We watch it before Halloween every year.

Great movie 10/10

This movie was great, but it was very weird for me - Simon Pegg looks almost exactly like my nephew, and my brain kept saying, "Look at Sebastian! How is he in this movie?"

LOVE this movie.

Great movie

The best zombie movie ever

Once I was at a chocolate shop with my kids and my son was saying how much we liked the movie (as kids will do). Without missing a beat, the shop owner said “Everybody needs a best friend in the shed” 🧟‍♂️ 😂

Awesome flick. The outtakes were great too. I wonder if they are availablem. I have to look. Anyway, these guys are freakin' genius.

Love Shaun of the Dead so much!!! Shaun earnestly telling his mom " There's nothing left of the man you love in there" while zombie Phil turns down the volume on the radio is just the best.

I won tickets to the second ever screening. Simon Pegg did a quick intro, recounted how he spoke to George Romero, and was apologising for the film, in case Romero thought he was making fun of Zombie films, to which Romero told Pegg to stop apologizing and that he thought it was a great movie.

Ответ для ebjornen

I don't really think it lampoons the genre, though. The elements of humor come from the characters and the social commentary. It isn't a parody at all. It is exactly what it says it is: a romantic comedy with zombies.

Ответ для Nathan Pinion

Hot Fuzz on the other hand, is absolutely a parody in every way that Shaun isn't. The expectations and aesthetics of the films it's poking fun at are a big element of that one.
