Completely agree. The not-quite-understanding is part of the appeal. Such a wonderful, odd book.

M. John Harrison was what I call a genre-slut long before it became fashionable. He just does whatever the hell he feels like doing, enough people are along for the ride to be worth his publishers' while, and fifty year flits by in no time.
