if I had to guess though, mihoyo kinda like their culture references so I wouldn't be surprised if the theater framing was always there, and it was the JP localization that decided there weren't any plays they could sub in that fit the situation and would have good recognition from JP players

of course it's was actually pretty easy to quit them because they went from having a pretty distinct style and painterly charm to just an entirely different artstyle that's uncomfortable photoreal and repetitive
