The Trans Journalist Association has a style guide the @startribune.com can check if they're unsure how to talk about a transgender person: styleguide.transjournalists.org If your journalist isn't competent to handle a trans subject, they need to be trained. It's ridiculous that this is happening.

On Monday, Brenton Doyle was traded to the White Sox and sent to Boston. On Tuesday, he was in the lineup. It’s 11:30 in Boston, and he will fly to his new home in Chicago tonight, arriving who knows when? That’s a lot.

This White Sox-Red Sox game is, well, it’s something.

A tool used to rephrase plagiarised text changed "final solution" to "mass killing of an ethnic group" in a chemistry paper. Now retracted thanks to a PubPeer user who spotted this. pubpeer.com/publications...

This is a huge issue for scholarship, not just for library collections. We can’t keep ebooks, etexts, ejournals, only rent them. Which means: - paying over & over again to achess the same titles, & - no guarantees of finding the same works later; they can be yanked at any time.

It's clear that there's a lot about these systems that need to change: who is allowed grace, who is seen as an authority, how alogorithms have wrecked media ecosystems, how outreach is (or isn't) rewarded, media literacy and critical thinking...it's a bigger conversation than just "AI bad" (it is!).

When someone as popular and well-resourced as Green turns to LLMs as a lifeline, I get where that impulse comes from, even if I think it's wrong. But I also think about all the amazing science communicators out there doing human work, for humans, with a fraction of the audience and resources.

One of most heartbreaking things about Hank Green turning to LLMs is that he gets to do science communication full-time to a massive audience and is well-resourced. He doesn't need to cut corners or outsource his thinking. Meanwhile, there are so many people doing amazing work with zero resources.

A scientist who just lost her grant cuts straight to the heart of it: “Requiring that NIH only fund work leading directly to a drug or other biomedical intervention… would rule out much basic research funded by the agency.” It’s pathetic & harmful to limit our understanding of health like this

Did folks realise that when you mouse over the ACS logo on their header, it’s animated. I need a cold shower. #chemsky

The old ACS logo had an interesting history but the new one has a broader recognition factor: everyone knows the Death Star when they see it.

Story is really important given pharma push to loosen U.S. Phase I trial regulations so U.S. can be more "competitive" with China.
