This is SUCH an incredible story from Felicity! A bit of a medical mystery that nobody wanted to publish (you can guess why) but the BMJ took on.

Felicity Nelson

After 5 months of investigation, and more than 20 rejections from various science news outlets, my investigation into China's detention of surgeon Qingping Xie, the inventor of Alzheimer's disease surgery, made the front page of The BMJ today: www.bmj.com/content/394/...

Really great wrap-up covering why the right-wing started with trans sports bans is part of a larger plan to defund and hurt women's sports (and further control over women's bodies). defector.com/is-the-right...

Is The Right's Next Project Make Women's Sports Girly Again? | DefectorWithin a few weeks of the country’s highest court giving states permission to ban trans girls from nearly all school sports, the influential right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation made clear it...defector.com

Turns out the TV DOES rot your brain, but ONLY if you're a man! -Fascinatingly, women did not experience the same negative cognitive effects from TV-watching. -The researchers barely mentioned this. -UH, SEEMS LIKE AN IMPORTANT POINT!!!! I wrote abt it: www.sciencealert.com/watching-too...

Bad News For Bingers: Watching Too Much TV Linked to Smaller Brain VolumeIf you click on the TV and hear a voice from your childhood saying, "That idiot box is going to rot your brain!" – you're not alone.www.sciencealert.com

I've gained a LOT of new followers on a couple other platforms recently (and not too shabby over here either), so I made a little re-intro video here for those who don't know who the heck I am or what I do! (PS. I also do ceramics and ecstatic dance & I'm a dual US and Australian citizen.) #author

I started dancing and doing ceramics in my 40s, and as I finish up the decade, I'd say those were two of my best decisions—in a decade filled with GREAT personal life decisions! (got rid of house and car, pursued my career dreams, got more sunshine/outdoor time, being others.)

New martial arts side quest: I’m a few weeks away from turning 40 — and I’ve decided to start wushu and tai chi! (Side note, my teacher is in his 60s!)

Blessings to the people who are still digging through the rubble to have been able to even find this adorable little soul. WOW.

WeRateDogs

This is Beily. He was miraculously found alive under rubble 29 days after the Venezuela earthquakes. He has since been reunited with his 11-year-old human Victoria and is expected to make a full recovery. 14/10 for all (TT: fuerzavzla1)

Shocking!!!

I, too, went to see the Odyssey this weekend. Couldn’t help but notice that all four movie previews we saw, (presumably for films that Hollywood movie studios are betting are the next big thing), did not pass the Bechdel test. What are we doing here?

It's my half-birthday & what better way to celebrate than a chat with a brilliant immune-systems researcher Marlo Möller on the BBC? We talked abt the strengths of female bodies from POVs of a science journalist & researcher specializing in tuberculosis & other diseases www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w...

There's not much that has made me happier over the last month than seeing Ana Mendieta's art get its flowers. Been a fan for ages now, and the raft of attention and understanding is truly a balm for my soul. Can't wait to see her big exhibit at The Tate. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Imagine a city SO pathetic they give $$$$$ to grow & support the biggest tech companies on the planet & don't even get them to provide public WiFi? Embarrassing for Seattle (GROW a pair!!) but ditto @amazon and @microsoft.com buncha losers. NO public wifi @wsdot.wa.gov ferry terminal or waterfront.

Amazing how much times have changed. My parents drank and smoked weed and cigs, and they both did all three while pregnant and after I was born (I remember clocking joints vs. cigs at a V. young age). I DID have a car seat though!! Unusual for the time. Born 1977. Calls for an LOL-sob.

Started writing health #sciencenews takes for @sciencealert.com.web.brid.gy to fill in for a colleague. Here's my first: Research finds Vitamin D may not replenish enough from summer sun if you aren't getting enough the rest of the year! #healthnews www.sciencealert.com/summer-sun-m...

Bad News: All This Summer Sun Likely Won't Fix Your Vitamin D Levels, Study FindsSummer just feels like a healthier season – plenty of daylight after work to play soccer or picnic in the park, beach days, and a free boost of vitamin D from all that extra sunshine.www.sciencealert.com

Hard agree. That they were able trace this is really impressive (and I'm not even a Taco Bell fan, I prefer del Taco or Taco Time).

Sarah Taber

A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

Had a discussion with @turquoiselaksa.bsky.social and suggested they deserved a Book Nerd badge and so they made one!!! Said to share/bestow on others so here we go! I think its so cute & perfect & I love a badge 💙

Turquoise Nudel

I decided that no one was probably going to present me with my badge, so I went ahead and made one!

It's the end of the world as they know it for many people on Earth these days between semi-natural disasters and wars.

YIKES. WHY is American shooting itself in the foot like this?? So dumb. On the other hand, I have high hopes that these educated folk can go back and use their skills to out-compete the US in every damn sector in the next 30 years.

Matt Shipman (he/him)

This is devastating for several different groups. It hurts universities. It hurts any competitive industry that draws on academic research for innovation (e.g., tech, health, agriculture). It hurts any industry sector that relies on a high-skill workforce. Most importantly, it hurts students.
