A tomato sandwich is just tomato and mayo (or whatever spread you prefer), I don't make the rules.

Hi Stassa, Just got a note from Brian; I didn't know this had happened and came looking for you as I was wondering. I'm just sorry to hear this and wish you the best. Thanks SO much for commissioning my story!!

000

PS. Your saying "your personal experience doesn't mean fuck all" - I could say the same thing to you as that's what you are relying on (I won't, because that's rude). I don't agree w/you, you don't agree w/me, that's OK. If you want to bring some specific arguments, do so, but not just insults.

I'm not going that far & think that much of the conventional thinking about it is fairly accurate, but I don't see evidence for all the points pushed by treatment centers and the profit-making side of this world, which is extensive. If you are in the space you know that there's tons of disagreement

I've been reading up on the subject literally my entire life, incl changes over the decades to the DSM, etc. If you have too, then you know there's a fairly wide spectrum of expert opinion on addiction. MANY ppl who have worked in the field who think the entire basis of how we understand it is wrong

100

As a member of a family that has multiple and overlapping addictions on both sides, it's interesting that you assume there is a definitive answer here about labeling these things as addictions, as there is not. It's WAY more complicated than that. I'd honestly suggest reading up about addiction.

Uh, not all the experts agree that joining a cult is an addiction at all (some overlap w/addictive behavior). Gambling is much more complicated and is a behavioral addiction which are both treated differently than drugs & alcohol and has different trajectories. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

I didn't think much about how this privledge really impacts my safety in all kinds of situations. Being a slightly larger-than-average woman and closer to the male norm means I'm physically safer than smaller women. And that's actually nuts if you think about it!

Addendum: I've been thinking a lot about my privileges as not only a woman finishing my 40s with zero health issues and no prescriptions for anything other than the odd antibiotics, but also one who has always been big enough to shoulder up to men and in some cases, intimidate harassers.

150

I climbed out, scrambled up a steep snowy hillside & hailed down (for real!) a local sheriff on his way to Telluride. What if I was a smaller woman? Would I have lived? "“Women are 73% more likely to be injured in a head-on crash, and they are 17% more likely to be killed in a car crash, than men.”

180

I'm also pretty close to the size of a crash-test dummy/average American male (5'6" 165). So when I rolled and crashed into the river, I was held PERFECTLY in place (I remember feeling both protected & held by my seatbelt which I've always been obsessive abt wearing.) LUCKY ME for being my size! 2/3

Oh I blame people for both of those things!

Xennial here. I learned on a typewriter first for a year but most of my friends didn't. We had typing class starting in 5th grade in our computer lab. It was a regular thing. A bit gamified but mostly boring. Chatting online through AOL online got me really fast but I had strong fundamentals.

Listened to this and will check out their other work, thank you!!

Wait, should I know who the Anonymous 4 is??

100

I have actually had this thought!!!!! And ooooh the things you could do with that soundtrack and like Bjork, Tori Amos, Cat Power, Agnes Obel!!

This is a perfect example of a study making a blanket statement about how TV affects the brain, when it only affects one sex. WHY is this a problem? There are LOTS of studies like this, and women treated the same as men leads to the world being designed around men!

ooooh, olivine is SO GOOD. Have fun! There's a beach on the Big Island made almost entirely of olivine sand BTW. (signed, a former geologist)

Thank you for pointing this out because otherwise I would have missed it! I saw the push notification, snorted, and went back to work.

Not just one! Three - one for health science (there's a tremendous amount going on that could easily generate a piece/week), one to cover environment/planet and resources including agriculture, and one to cover physics, space, etc. and would have space for some thoughtful/future-forward ideation.
