There's probably always been a self-centred streak in the UK, but it's much more 'present' in the discourse these days, IMHO.

After over a decade of austerity, the media/political brain drain, and the amplification of social media, plus the everything surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, I can't say I'm hugely surprised that there's a lot of self-centred feeling in the country.
