What’s wild is that only a few years ago, “prediction markets” had a whole different name and you used to have to go to Reno or Atlantic City to participate, otherwise it was a crime. Now we can’t even regulate them.

Kyle Cheney

JUST IN: Kalshi has won a federal court ruling to block a Minnesota law from taking effect that would have banned prediction markets in the state. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Horrific anecdotes: An immigration agent bluntly says that the suspicious appearance they look for is ‘Older Hispanic male.’ ICE bigwigs told field officers to “turn the creativity knob up to 11” & arrest more “collaterals.” Tonks is derived from the sound of an object striking a migrant’s skull.

Sergio olmos

‘Pretty sure he’s wet:’ Immigration agents used racial slurs during LA sweeps, court records show. “Yeah, just plug us in wherever you see some tonks and we’ll jump out.” “tonks everywhere selling food.”  W/ @wendyfry.bsky.social calmatters.org/justice/2026...

As a resident of downtown & a sporadic LA city official, I think the most compelling part of the image Patsouras paints is that of a City Hall eager to surrender power + responsibility. Most electeds I know want the pay, power, & prestige of the office WITHOUT the pain + consequences of choice.

Esotouric's Secret Los Angeles

What's wrong with Downtown Los Angeles? Nick Patsaouras thinks it's the Central City Association that lobbies City Hall for the benefit of its property owning members, to the detriment of prudent planning, public safety and small business health. www.citywatchla.com/la-election-...

People who are suddenly deported to countries they haven’t been to for years — or, in some cases, have NEVER been to — are incredibly vulnerable. We are going to be reading stories like this for years. God have mercy on their three little girls.

Adam Sawyer

“If immigration hadn't picked up my brother, my sister-in-law would still be alive, and the children wouldn't be going through this sorrow,” he said. “Unfortunately, immigration — the [U.S.] government — doesn't see that. It makes no difference to them.” www.stlpr.org/law-order/20...

My favorite Betye Saar quote was in a story I did in 2015 about how LA museums were then failing to engage her work. Her response: "They can’t wait and wait because then I’ll die and it’ll cost big bucks. Then they will pay for their hesitation.” Love her. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

Column: Betye Saar's art on race couldn't be timelier. So why aren't more museums showing her work? It's not for nothing that Betye Saar's traveling museum show is called "Still Tickin'."www.latimes.com

It is bad news when a perfectly reasonable, well-established pretrial diversion program is being cut by "moderate Democrats," the same people who are all "we cannot abolish ICE" www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

"I'm thrilled to end my relationship with the current administration," this DHS official posted. "Between the war on immigrants, the war on feds, and the war on facts (not to mention the crazy war in Iran and the brazen corruption), I just need a change."

Noah Shachtman

NEW: DHS' top number-cruncher just left the department -- and blasted the administration's "war on immigrants" on the way out. He's one of the very few DHS officials to step down and speak out publicly against this White House. Me in @wired.com ... www.wired.com/story/dhs-of...
