Why are "hard questons" and "tough choices" always "how much can we take from the weakest"? That's like a bully asking: "Shall I beat you up some more for your lunch money?" The tough choice would be not to be a sidekick, to stand up to a bully and to get your own money to buy your own lunch.

Come to think of it, isn't it really weird to envy somebody who is disabled, with all their discomfort, with the barriers they face, and actually all this fabricated outrage they get? Really, hand on heart, would you swap? But imagine just having a day without the outrage. A normal, quiet day.

A less poor, less miserable, less hateful society would be nicer to live in and much more productive. Imagine starting your day with news that doesn't involve outrage about how someone supposedly gets something you don't because they are disabled, or a single mother, or whatever.

If we showed compassion and looked after disabled people's health, we'd look after our own and our children's health too. We'd be all less ill, less often. Workplaces flexible enough for disabled people, transport accessible to them, would benefit everyone. That's called the social model.

We would have higher employment, since disability wouldn't be a barrier. Instead of stigmatising it we'd adapt education settings and workplaces to it. Disability welfare is spent in the economy and generates 50% more than it costs. We wouldn't need to harm the economy with cuts.

What if we had a government run on compassion, not casting about for cuts and scapegoats to justify them? We'd have a better society — and a better economy. We wouldn't be a country where families with disabled members are the main foodbank users and where blue badge drivers get abuse.

Compassion, a🧵 Every day, the media feeds us a diet of outrage. Daily hate. Immigration is down, so the next target is disabled people. If it hadn't been them it would've been someone else. It used to be single mothers. What if we refused to play and engaged compassion instead?

Baroness Casey claims just answering a voluntary questionnaire on disability would entitle her to welfare. It wouldn't. If a troll claimed this on X, they'd get: "You think? Try applying for PIP, see how far you get". Independent review? What happened to government advisors not briefing the media?

Vocational skills in the curriculum is good news in my book. Life takes many turns, and any vocational skill you get is a gift, a way of making a living. So long as we don't tell working class kids they aren't good enough for university. But a working class Cambridge graduate should understand that.

Always reinventing the wheel: study finds that fatigue-related physical exhaustion and cognitive complaints caused by long covid did not improved after psychotherapy. Neither do cancer or diabetes, but you do not push psychotherapy as cure there. Fatigue due to illness is not independent of illness.

@labouruk.bsky.social, if you collected the uncollected #tax (it's mostly corporation tax) for just one year, you could pay that year's #disability #welfare bill in entirety and have £0.5bn to spare. And you wouldn't need to say mean things about disabled people — 1 in 4 voters — to justify cuts.
