My recent experience, compared to a couple of decades ago, is that reviewers are encouraging, if not requiring, me to shove more and more into my papers (with the burgeoning of Supplementary Info sections making this worse). This may vary by field and local culture though.

I recognise that structure immediately from your description! When we've seen reports in that structure, they also have very smooth, plausible sentences that don't actually make sense when you think them through fully.

Not sure I agree. More content per paper can lead to epically long, indigestable papers.

Shadow use of genAI as a reviewer is shitty because you're putting someone else's work into the machine w/o consent, and as an author I'd rather hear Reviewer 2's bad attitudes than LLM platitudes. But if you sanction reviewers you'll just have no reviewers. It's a lose-lose situation.

On top of everythng Kirsty says, the funding call for the "AI Lab" was launched with such a short deadline as to make the writing of thorough, well-considered proposals virtully impossible....

The thing about testing a hypothesis from a scientific point of view, is that you come up with your idea or hunch and then set up your experiment to try to *disprove* it. I don't think there's an issue with having a hypothesis. The issue is not testing the hypothesis appropriately.

In metallurgy, pearlite is a steel microstructure. It is named as if it were a phase, but it is actually a mixture of two phases. When it was 1st discovered they couldn't resolve the 2 separate phases & it looked like a "pearly" single phase. Hence the name, & generations of confused undergrads.

Of course, there are some very dangerous women in the prison estate who need to be kept locked up, but they make up a minority of the female population in prisons. Instead of freeing violent men early, freeing women who have experienced male violence strikes me as a way forward.

This needs to be viewed in the context of what the report describes as a particular driver of women's offending and repeat offending: violence against women and girls.

Thanks, I enjoyed reading that. I recognize the problem, and although your solution is not for me (I'd forget to fill in the spreadsheet), I'm glad to hear it works for you! Unlike all the haters, I suspect it helps you be a better, more present parent, because you're not seething with resentment.

The more common version, I think, is that there is a ceiling, but then there are "exceptions".

This sounds like the sort of task that a genuinely useful AI would do for you, beautifully, but which a current LLM would scramble disastrously.

The idea of keeping track of who's doing the labour of parenting is getting a lot of hate here. But in many families, not keeping track tends to mean women do more & that that labour is invisible. Keeping a spreadsheet wouldn't be my choice, but I'm not seeing many suggestions for better solutions.

Use non-bio if someone in your household has skin allergies or is allergic to bio washing powders.
