Oakland installed the Franklin bikeway in a few months via routine paving. Rebuilding the gutter for that block would've required a major capital grant, meaning millions more dollars & many more years delay for planning, funding, design, & construction. I'll take a dozen more like Franklin instead.

Also OakDOT staff determined that the only way they can make all the project elements fit is if the bikeway curb separation is 2-feet wide. This works for the shorter front overhang of vehicles, but not for the longer rear overhang. So back-in angled parking would = no protected bikeway.

Usually I like back-in angled parking so drivers are facing forward to the street when pulling out, but in this case I'd rather have them face toward the curbside bikeway when pulling in.

Alameda is second place in the East Bay for number of protected bikeway projects built to date, & Fremont is third. I've been desperately trying to get cities like Bay Point or Antioch to build their first, but they continue dragging their feet despite horrible traffic safety issues.

From 2015. I think it's a testament to how far we've come that many of these projects don't spur the same sort of freak outs we saw 11 years ago. Protected bikeways are slowly becoming the new normal.

I haven’t been removing state-owned surface streets (like San Pablo or Ashby) from my analysis though, as local jurisdictions still have some influence over the designs of these facilities even if they don’t control them.

For my own analysis I have been excluding deaths on freeways, as there were some in Emeryville since 2021 but that’s not the city’s jurisdiction. But freeway interchanges still generate & concentrate car traffic, so jurisdictions w more of them will inherently have worse safety outcomes on average.

I think that’s still not enough data as there are many more trips beyond commutes, increasingly so since the pandemic. Cell phone based trip data analysis like Streetlight would probably be best, but I don’t know of regional analysis using this.

A better metric would be fatal/serious crashes per trip within a jurisdiction, but I don’t know if this data exists or if anyone is analyzing it. In any case, Emeryville is definitely excelling.

Residential population isn’t enough data, as some communities (like Emeryville) see many times more traffic than their residential population due to high retail & in-commute trips. Also communities with more freeway interchanges & rail crossings see greater traffic safety risks in general.

Yep, here’s a photo I took of Dave on his bike from back in 2015 when this part of Grand Ave was last paved. Bike East Bay & WOBO were pushing for angled parking protected bike lanes even back then, but all we got was sharrows. It’s nice to live long enough to get our revenge!

Yes, similar to the angled-parking protected bike lanes that OakDOT installed on 10th Street. In that case the islands are 3 feet wide but staff found that the car overhang is only about 1 foot. So w the Grand Ave project the islands will be narrowed to 2 feet. bsky.app/profile/prin...
