"’I am deeply invested in ensuring that our streets are safe for all users, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. And that is why I support bike lanes on Hopkins Street,’ [Mayor Ishii] said. ‘Cyclist infrastructure improves safety for everyone.’”

The Berkeley Scanner

Despite a sharply divided public, Berkeley has approved protected bike lanes on Hopkins Street. CM Shoshana O'Keefe (who reps the district) called it "absolute madness." "This is about more than just a bike lane," countered CM Mark Humbert.

“‘As Berkeley continues to grow,’ Kesarwani wrote, ‘I believe we have an opportunity and an obligation to plan for that growth in a way that allows people, including parents, children, the young who cannot afford a car, and the elderly who cannot safely operate one — to walk or bike safely.’”

Berkeley leaders will decide on an updated plan to build the long-debated bike lanes, at the expense of more than 100 parking spaces.

70+ postcards in support of a protected bikeway on Hopkins in N Berkeley were mailed out to the Mayor & City Council yesterday, including these great ones from area kids who want to get around on their own 2 wheels. Visit BikeEastBay.org/Hopkins to show your support too, before the July 28 vote!

“[Libby] Lee-Egan…installed a traffic counter at her house that sometimes measures drivers whizzing by at 45 [mph], a dangerous condition for any cyclist or scooter rider pedaling alongside them. ‘If it comes down to safety versus parking, we cannot let parking win,’ [she] said. ‘That’s crazy.”

San Francisco Chronicle

It’s the latest salvo in a battle that’s spanned two mayoral administrations and endured endless rhetoric about the war on cars. And it could result in 100 lost parking spaces in Berkeley.

Good to see the City making quick, common sense safety improvements where motorists have killed pedestrians. That said, there is still more to do to make Claremont, Marin, and Rose safe.

Berkeleyside

The city hopes fresh paint and other changes will improve safety along Claremont and Marin avenues, and at other dangerous intersections.

Make Hopkins Street Safe for ALL!On April 15, Berkeley City Council Facilities, Infrastructure, Transportation, Environment & Sustainability (FITES) Committee will weigh in on a proposal several Councilmembers have put forward to repave Hopkins Street without any bike or transit infrastructure improvements. Act now to urge the FITES committee to instead recommend repaving Hopkins with pedestrian, bike, and transit improvements, as approved in an earlier 8-1 council vote. We can't afford to miss this opportunity. Protected bike lanes on Hopkins will provide critical low-stress bicycle connections to schools and other key destinations for people of all ages and abilities. If the City does not create those connections when the street is repaved, there will continue to be a significant gap in the City’s low-stress bike network, likely for decades. Send the committee a letter now to let them know that making Hopkins Street safe for ALL is important to you.actionnetwork.org
