the trope of "the black best friend" has a specific meaning. it's not when an actor is black and they play a friend.

This is extra embarrassing given that Mr. and—to an extent—Mrs. Incredible are both parents who very much do not know best when it comes to their kids and end up fumbling to the right answers in high-stress, high-stakes situations that endangered their children’s lives

So, what happens if I'm a parent and I know that my kid needs highly paid teachers, a library full of books with diverse characters, trans-inclusive bathrooms and extracurriculars, and a curriculum unpacking topics like systemic racism, colonial oppression, economic inequality, and climate change?

What is the point of this kind of response to complete strangers having conversations about a movie everyone is talking about? You are trying to shut down chatter nobody is forcing you to participate in. Please go enjoy yourself without feeling obligated to tell me.

You can disagree with her individual points about why she found Nolan’s adaptation to be a series of missed opportunities to be more daring, more interesting, more clever. But how many of us can say we didn’t feel this exact way about some bloated big budget show/movie or another in recent memory?

Wilson is, unsurprisingly, a connoisseur of adaptations of “The Odyssey.” I think folks who quibble with the details within her take down of Nolan’s film misses her larger point: that spectacle catering to the mainstream comes at the expense of, ironically, what an auteur’s vision should offer.

I didn’t get around to reading her review until just now but she is having so much fun lollll, I’m in the first paragraph and she’s already taking me out with "Unlike some of Nolan’s other films, The Odyssey is not boring"

It’s historical fiction that looks at the clash of settler forces of Danes and Saxons, and I find the way it presents their faith to be so restrained and nuanced, and honestly a pretty satisfyingly critical view of the greed and hypocrisy of Christians
