Every time I look at a comment thread on Facebook I have to assume the majority of commenters are bots, because if they are actual humans then I will lose complete faith in humanity.

My beautiful hardcover SILMARILLION is textually identical to my battered paperback copy.

Granted, we have our preferences for editions. I love a good handsomely illustrated edition as much as anyone, but none of that really alters our experience of the text itself.

Seeing discourse over the best version of The Odyssey and to experience in theaters, and it reminds me that one reason I love literature so much is that it’s endlessly and perfectly replicable. There’s no “best” reading experience the way there is for film/music/food/art/etc.

That’s true from what I’ve read! But Arthur and Co. still strike me as a lot more morally fit than Agamemnon and Friends.

Even the Mahabharata, which is probably the closest story to THE ILIAD in terms of basic story circumstance, doesn’t really present the winning side as in the wrong, or at least morally worse, the way Homer does. It’s more an ethical dilemma. It’s interesting!
