After open heart surgery more than six weeks ago for a mitral valve repair and maze procedure, several sessions of cardiac rehab, and a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I’m ready once again to climb the nine steps from the pews to the chancel at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston. ⚓️

I’d be a tobacco farmer in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. (Also, my paternal grandmother was a public school teacher.)

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

This is amazing.

Overnight, a masked bandit broke into our kitchen. Armed with opposable thumbs, he proceeded to sample everything on offer. I’d just visited the farmers market, so the menu was extensive. I can now share a highly specific peer-reviewed list of what this particular raider did & did not enjoy. 🧵

Greetings from Houston. 🚀 If you’re accepted, I’ll pray for you!

NASA is accepting applications for its next yearlong "Mars" mission at the Johnson Space Center -- but this crew should expect tighter quarters. Most of the mission will be spent inside a pretend spacecraft that's just 650 square feet. Could you handle it? www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston...

As an Episcopal priest, this describes my life. ⚓️

There is a skill, an art even, to enthusiastically greeting someone who comes up to you, who you’ve clearly spoken to many times, and contextualising them based on questions that gather details without them realising that you’re doing that.

A 🧵 about the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians #ICM2026, which began today in Philadelphia and included the awarding of the Fields Medal and four other honors. I am *not* a mathematician, but we are here because our firstborn is on an academic path to study pure math.

I’m on an American Airlines flight aboard a lovely Airbus A319 aircraft. But let me tell you something, at 6’2” tall, I do not *quite* fit the space between these rows of seats.

We’ve started watching Star City. Hoo boy. I love it.

Now more than four weeks post-open heart surgery for a mitral valve repair and maze procedure, I’m blessedly sleeping on my side once again and driving a little. And only recently did I come to realize that the mitral valve is so named because, from a certain angle, it resembles a bishop’s mitre. ⚓️

I’m grateful for everyone who has made my recovery from a mitral valve repair and maze procedure easier than it otherwise would have been, especially my wife, our kids, my cardiologist, cardiac rehab professionals, my church staff and lay leaders, and the prayers of many, known and unknown to me.

My brother once sold bull semen, managed a dairy farm, managed buildings at UNCG, and eventually managed buildings for the U.S. State Department in Chad, Iraq, etc. No informed citizen should want me to be doing any of those things. 🤣🐂🥛🏫🇹🇩🇮🇶🇺🇸

Thought experiment- if you were suddenly appointed to do your sibling’s job, how badly would you suck at it?

When you’re in an exam room in Houston waiting for your cardiologist, you can pass the time by perusing AramcoWorld, published by Aramco Americas, a subsidiary of Saudi Aramco.
