During our family trip to Philadelphia, I found the location of the old court house/town hall. This is where all of the men in a group of German Moravians, including my 6th great-grandfather Philip Meurer, were taken after their transatlantic voyage in 1742. 🧵⚓️

In his journal, written in German Kurrent script, he notes how they were asked to swear allegiance to and not rebel against the British crown and to forswear allegiance to the Pope, which they were happy to promise, but only without an oath. (Photo is of a contemporaneous English translation.)
At the end of his journal, Meurer puts his name and refers to “Philadelphia in America in [Pennsylvania].” (Photo is of a contemporaneous English translation.)
Meurer is named and quoted in the first chapter of this book, which is a history of xenophobia in America. Although a law in Pennsylvania required all white male immigrants to be registered, it was mostly applied only to German men.

A real question: were classicists acting this insane about O Brother, Where Art Thou when it came out
After open heart surgery more than six weeks ago for a mitral valve repair and maze procedure, several sessions of cardiac rehab, and a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I’m ready once again to climb the nine steps from the pews to the chancel at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston. ⚓️
Lots of things have gotten worse, yeah, but we did get our movie theater back.
Rob SaucedoWe have fun.
Is this like when we were promised that migrant farm workers would be replaced by medicaid recipients? How’s that going these days?
Aaron RuparTrump claims he’s going to replace migrant truck drivers with veterans
This is what you’d get if Liberace designed an Applebee’s.
Dom ErvolinaDeputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted this video of the Oval Office and it somehow looks even more embarrassing than I realized
“A Reuters analysis found the image of the map included in the presentation contained an artificial intelligence watermark that signals it was made with OpenAI tools.”
I’d be a tobacco farmer in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. (Also, my paternal grandmother was a public school teacher.)
RevanEnough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?
I went to look for other critters while the cicada slowly emerged and from across the park I heard all of them start cheering like the main act came onto the stage. It was so nice 😭
Sarah McAnulty, Ph.D.I was so toast earlier today and was like “oh god I have to run a moth night how am I going to muster the energy”, but then the bats put on a show to rival Shamu, and an emerging cicada dazzled the crowd and I was like oh yeah that’s why I do this.
As an archivist I am really struggling to witness a civilization literally shred its history for the sake of absolutely nothing.
Nick PosegayOh is Anthropic employing state-of-the-art storage technology to ensure the scans of books they destroyed will resist bit rot? What's their plan for changing file format compatibilities? Are they employing archival best practices for digital redundancy? How vulnerable are they to cyber attacks?
honestly pretty funny that no matter what Emily Wilson does people will be insane about it. almost like she was cursed by some powerful being
A 🧵 about the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians #ICM2026, which began today in Philadelphia and included the awarding of the Fields Medal and four other honors. I am *not* a mathematician, but we are here because our firstborn is on an academic path to study pure math.
On the left is an image of the Fields Medal, which includes the head of Archimedes in profile and a Latin inscription that one speaker translated, perhaps a little loosely, as this: “To transcend oneself and grasp the universe.” On the right are the four individuals who received the award this year.
I’m on an American Airlines flight aboard a lovely Airbus A319 aircraft. But let me tell you something, at 6’2” tall, I do not *quite* fit the space between these rows of seats.
