It's actually a good thing for a critic to be able to identify and dissect the idiosyncrasies of an artist. Artistic choices are the things critics examine. And if one of those choices is "auteur with a brass ear insisted on writing his own script" that is a reasonable thing to highlight.

Goya rightly gets a lot of love for his Black Paintings, this slightly earlier work is another of my faves, The Burial of the Sardine (1812–1819). Love how it grows increasingly sinister the more details you pick out, the masked revellers surrounding the grinning 'King of the Carnival'...
I can't believe I missed this – I loved reading this story about a missionary in a strange land in our slush and I'm so glad it's out in the world (and even better)
