Burnham, Corbyn and Farage behave like we want the coal and the steel, that we don’t aspire for the arts, that we are inherently bigoted, that social housing, not ownership is our destiny. That we know our place and that is a glorious and virtuous ideal.

Communities aren’t invested in steel and coal, they’re invested in the institutional dependency and economic befits it provides. Replace it with any other institution, like the civil service, and it’ll have the same effect.

Speak to a steel worker and they can’t wait for retirement. They aren’t doing the job because it’s great, they do it because it’s practical and the pay and benefits gives them access to stability and the middle class.

In the same way a white liberal progressive who’s never spoken to a non-white person will pontificate online, these people view and talk about the working class in a way that is demeaning, removed from reality and is intended for an audience the working class isn’t part of.
