The Past Ahead (2004) ends my coverage of "Idemitsu Mako What a Woman Made". The installation is probably the best and most mesmerising viewing experience I had this year: asian-docs.com/2026/08/04/i...

Idemitsu Mako What a Woman Made (2026)/part 5 – The Past AheadThis is the last entry in my coverage of the exhibition (here Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4) The retrospective Idemitsu Mako What a Woman Made, currently on view at the Tokyo Photographic Art …asian-docs.commatteoB

part 4 of my coverage of Idemitsu Mako's retrospective: Shodows Part 1 (1980), Kiyoko’s Situation (1989) (one of her bleakest), and Kae, Act Like a Girl! (1996), an important shift in her career... asian-docs.com/2026/07/26/i...

Wakao Ayako and Mizutani Yutaka in Izakaya Moheji 2, a TV special aired in 2013 on TBS. Wakao would appear again in the 4th installment of the series in 2015, to this day, her last role on the small/big screen. She was 80 years old at the time, but she had lost none of her charm or aura...

There used to be a really good sushi place in Nishi-Shinjuku, near Yodobashi, that some people at Sumitomo Seimei introduced me to and I continued patronizing. Imagine my surprise one day seeing Wakao Ayako at the counter eating sushi.

She was Hayao Miyazaki's "right-hand" collaborator from the '70s onward. Her name was Michiyo Yasuda -- the best color designer in animation. Yasuda's eye for color gave Ghibli's work a totally different look. We explore her methods: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-artist...

Author Keigo Higashino passed away at 68 from cancer last week. Most people know him in the West as the author of "The Devotion of Suspect X" and "Salvation of a Saint" but he wrote SO many books. He's one of the most prolific mystery authors in Japan. This is a huge shock. He will be missed.

What this @theguardian.com column misses is that Dazai’s life is rife with exactly the self-loathing, masculinist attitude that gets so much traction in certain circles online ATM. A 2020s Dazai (or Mishima) boom in English may be good for book sales—but it doesn’t really bode well for society.
