This is an amazing chart - but it shows *relative* inequality. Because wealth has grown from 3.5 to 7 times annual GDP since 1991, the *absolute* wealth gaps are wider, and stagnant wages mean it's harder to earn your way up the ladder. So beneath the surface, still cause for concern.

Using the same primary data source as Kristian’s chart (WID) you can see that whilst wealth inequality reduced dramatically in the post war era up to the 1980s, since then it has widened dramatically once again. The top 0,1% and 1% have seen their wealth increase steadily. The bottom *quarter*?

I think most economists wouldn’t find it that amazing. Most of the late 19th and 20th century saw a massive redistribution of wealth. But Kristian’s chart tells us little about wealth inequality: it’s looking at wealth *concentration*. You need to look at the less wealthy majority too.

It's driving me insane. The govt spends £1.4 trillion a year. Borrowing estimates are often by tens of billions over a year. But we're supposed to imagine money is budgeted to the last penny.
